Mom repays Chicago street performer after son steals his tip bucket in viral video

I always love seeing Andrew David when I’m in the Chicago Loop! He’s a really talented street performer, and he plays such chill, relaxing music – it’s the perfect vibe for shopping.

David shared that these songs helped him deal with the stress after someone stole his tip jar on May 4th. The thief, a teenager wearing a mask, took it from him at the corner of State and Madison streets.

He explained to CBS Chicago that he stayed surprisingly calm because he didn’t see much point in getting upset. He believes the song he was singing at the time helped him accept what happened and just move on.

Honestly, the video is wild. While this kid was running off, David just casually asked him, like, ‘Hey, could you at least hand over the box?’ It was so unexpected!

Although he playfully claimed he was too old to pursue the matter himself, he aimed for a different kind of resolution: getting widespread attention online.

Teen thief’s mom returns singer’s stolen tips “and then some”

David captured the theft of his tips on video with his iPad. Hoping to catch the culprit, he posted the video online, and viewers quickly recognized the thief as a student from Innovations High School.

The street singer informed the school principal about the theft, and surprisingly, the thief’s mother apologized and repaid the stolen amount – plus extra.

He remembered that she showed him around the school, and they were very generous, replacing everything he’d lost and even adding more.

Ultimately, David hopes the video—which has quickly become very popular online—will help the person who stole from him learn from their mistake.

It was upsetting for those who had already contributed, and a waste of my time, but we’ll recover from this. That’s just how life goes.

People online are praising David and the teen’s mother for turning a difficult situation into a positive one, with one Instagram user calling it “a perfect example for our young generation.”

Someone commented that they admired him for handling the situation himself instead of involving the police, seeing it as a chance for everyone involved to learn. They hoped the young people would take the lesson to heart and avoid similar behavior with someone who might react more harshly, like by calling the police or even becoming violent.

I’ve seen a lot of people trying to help David out financially, which is awesome, but as of right now, there isn’t an official GoFundMe page set up for him. People are just trying to organize support on their own, which is really cool to see.
