On the morning of April 20, 2026, students were socializing near Sri Jagannath Sishu Vidya Mandir Elementary School in Dhirakula village, Mayurbhanj district, Odisha, when an incident occurred.
The students didn’t realize a venomous snake was coming towards them, but Kali the dog felt something wasn’t right.
Rather than running away, the beloved village dog jumped into action to help keep the children safe.

Although the snake was killed and no students were injured, Kali was bitten on the mouth and sadly died from the venom.
When word got around that she was gone, it hit the village hard. Everyone felt a mix of relief and sadness, honestly. It was like a weight lifted, but at a real cost, you know?
Villagers held a funeral for her, a special honor usually given only to people, as reported by Daily Hunt.
It was really sad seeing Kali go. They carried her body on this beautiful trolley covered in flowers, all wrapped in white, and gave her a proper, respectful send-off. It felt like a full ceremony, you know? Definitely a somber moment in the game.
According to NDTV, a local villager stated, “Kali protected our children and will always be remembered.”
Kali saved the day and is now fondly remembered as a protector of the children.
Dogs have often come to the aid of people in need. For example, in January 2026, a dog assisted rescuers in Oregon, ultimately helping them find a woman who was lost in difficult landscape.
