The Japanese Coast Guard recently shared a funny story online about rescuing what they thought was a flamingo. It turned out the ‘flamingo’ was actually a large inflatable pool toy that had floated into a busy and potentially dangerous shipping lane.
The Regional Headquarters for the Tokai area shared news on X (formerly Twitter) that they rescued a bird found floating alone in the ocean.
The post gained a lot of attention when people noticed the commenters were seriously concerned about how a flamingo ended up swimming to shore, and whether it had any chicks with it.
Lone flamingo rescued from dangerous waterway
The buoy was found in the Irako Waterway, a deep channel that links the Pacific Ocean to Ise Bay and Mikawa Bay. This waterway is known for its strong tides and busy shipping lanes filled with ferries, tankers, and cargo ships.
We rescued a flamingo found in the Irago Channel! Thankfully, it was alone, but we imagined how dangerous it would be if it had been with a chick.
Please be careful when using floats or other water toys – strong winds can easily carry them (and children!) away. Always keep a close eye on your kids! #JapanCoastGuard #TobaCoastGuardOffice

If the Coast Guard sees something floating in the ocean, they must act as if someone might be drowning. This means they start a full search and rescue, which could include helicopters, boats, and help from local fishermen, and these operations can last for several hours.
The coast guard is urging parents to be careful near the water. Large inflatable toys can easily be carried out to sea by even a light breeze, quickly pulling a child far away from shore before anyone can help.
Japanese authorities have a history of creating amusing public safety moments that capture the internet’s attention. Recently, in March 2026, a deer strayed from Nara and ended up relaxing on the grounds of an Osaka police station, quickly becoming a popular sight.
