Spirit Airlines stopped flying and closed all of its airports at 3:00 AM on May 2, 2026, impacting 44 million passengers who flew with them each year.
Hi There Hunter, a popular YouTuber, has started a campaign called Spirit 2.0 to try and buy Spirit Airlines’ assets. The goal is to prevent private equity firms from taking over and instead turn the airline into a cooperative owned by the community.
The website letsbuyspirit.com experienced technical difficulties and temporarily stopped accepting pledges shortly after going live. This was caused by a huge surge in visitors, and the team is working to improve the site’s servers to handle the traffic.
Overwhelming response causes site crash
Prior to the website outage, the campaign had received $22.8 million in pledges from 36,605 people who signed up as Founding Patrons. These patrons pledged at least $45, an amount chosen to reflect the average cost of a one-way Spirit Airlines ticket.

The new ownership plan is modeled after the Green Bay Packers football team. Each verified member gets one vote on important decisions, no matter how much they contribute. However, members will receive a share of any profits based on the size of their contribution.
This new plan would give both flight crews and ground staff a real stake in the company, while also limiting how much executives can earn compared to the average worker’s pay.
The current effort is simply a statement of intent, not a firm commitment, and no funds have been gathered yet. Any mention of dividends, voting, or sharing profits is just a preliminary idea and isn’t legally binding right now.
Even if we raise a significant amount of money, we’ll still need lawyers specializing in securities and aviation to review and approve any formal offer to buy the company and how it would be structured, before we can proceed.
