The success of Warner Bros.’ Mortal Kombat movies sparked a renewed interest in adapting fighting games for the big screen, and that trend will continue this year with Paramount Pictures’ new film. While Street Fighter has been adapted before, this upcoming version promises to be the most faithful to the source material, thanks to contributions from Takayuki Nakayama, the director of Street Fighter V and Street Fighter VI.
Game Informer spoke with Nakayama about the actors chosen to play the famous fighters in Street Fighter. While he complimented the entire cast, Nakayama especially praised Andrew Koji, who will be playing Ryu. He shared that Koji showed a deep respect for the game and consistently thought about what Ryu would do in any given situation, really immersing himself in the role. This level of dedication is great news for Street Fighter fans, as it addresses one of the biggest criticisms of the 1994 live-action movie.
Ryu Has Not Fared Well in Live-Action Street Fighter Films
As a longtime fan, I’ve always seen Ryu as the heart of Street Fighter. He’s the character everyone knows! Along with his rival Ken, he’s been playable in every single game – that’s pretty amazing consistency. It was so satisfying to see him finally defeat M. Bison in Street Fighter V! Capcom has tried pushing other characters like Alex and Luke as leads, but honestly, nobody connects with the series quite like Ryu does for me and a lot of other players.
Although Ryu is a central character in the Street Fighter games, the 1994 movie didn’t showcase him well. The filmmakers tried to replicate the success of G.I. Joe by centering the plot around a military storyline instead of a fighting tournament. This meant characters like Ryu and Ken took a backseat to Colonel William Guile, who was played by Jean-Claude Van Damme.
In the few scenes he was in, Ryu wasn’t like the character from the video game. Instead of being a Japanese martial artist traveling the world to test his skills, this Ryu was an American trickster trying to sell fake weapons to Shadaloo. He also had a very different personality – he was sarcastic and made jokes, unlike the serious and determined Ryu players know.
Byron Mann’s performance was fun to watch, but his portrayal didn’t really match what fans expected from the character. The 2009 movie, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, also left out Ryu – he only appeared briefly at the end, hinting at a continuation that never materialized.
The New Street Fighter Film Will Make Ryu Matter
It’s been over a decade since a live-action Street Fighter movie, and unfortunately, recent Mortal Kombat adaptations haven’t given the main fighters the spotlight they deserve. While Ludi Lin did a good job playing Liu Kang and staying true to the character from the Mortal Kombat games, he wasn’t the central hero in either film.
As someone who loves fighting game movies (and is often disappointed!), I’ve always felt like filmmakers underestimate how cool protagonists can be. They’re usually the most direct characters, sure, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t get great storylines! Thankfully, this new Street Fighter film seems to understand that and has a real opportunity to finally do Ryu justice. Everything we’ve seen suggests Ken – Noah Centineo is perfect casting, by the way – will be front and center, but it looks like Ryu’s still going to be a huge part of the story, which is awesome.
The new movie will show Ryu as a former fighting champion who has left that life behind, telling Chun-Li he’s no longer focused on battles. Despite this, he’ll be drawn back into action for another World Warrior Tournament to defeat Bison’s plans and rebuild his friendship with Ken. According to Nakayama, actor Koji is perfectly suited to play Ryu, delivering the adaptation fans have always wanted.
