Okay, this weekend’s Love Island was seriously good! We had everything – tears, people being sneaky, new connections forming, and even some… interesting conversations. Honestly, that’s what makes a great episode, especially when you don’t see the drama coming! I really enjoyed the last two episodes, but I have to vent about something. I absolutely loathed that recoupling twist! Letting the public decide who couples up is a terrible idea, and new Islanders should be allowed to struggle and maybe even fail – it’s more realistic! Actually, scratch that, it’s two things that bothered me!
Typically, viewers vote for their favorite couples on Love Island USA, and the ones with the fewest votes are at risk of being eliminated. But sometimes, like in this situation, viewers get to choose which new arrivals couple up with existing Islanders – it’s almost like writing a fan fiction story with real people! This time, viewers paired Sol with Sincere, Caleb with Kenzie, and Jen with Gabe, leaving Melanie, Corbin, and Bea single. (Aniya & KC, Zach & Kayda, and Trinity & Bryce stayed together.) It feels a bit strange ethically, considering these people are actually sharing beds (though Melanie chose to sleep elsewhere). The show’s audience is known for making questionable choices (as seen with past seasons), and frankly, I wouldn’t want my potential partner to be chosen based on just 15 minutes of edited footage.
Honestly, the way they handled things with the new arrivals felt totally unfair! To get Jen into the villa and Bea out, producers had Corbin pick between Melanie and Bea – which struck me as weirdly old-fashioned, like letting a guy decide for everyone. Everyone knew he’d choose Melanie, and he did, leaving Bea on her own. I really don’t get it; Bea was hilarious! Her self-deprecating jokes alone—like the one about not having ten toes but still standing firm—were gold. Jen… well, she’s okay, but her shark bite stories just didn’t compare. Bea genuinely connected with people in there and had amazing TV presence, while Jen feels like a rehash of Kenzie, only less interesting. Even Gabe seemed to really like Bea, despite flirting with everyone! Kenzie even said he cried when she left. I get that the producers worry about things getting too settled, and fans wanting more drama, but honestly, in all my years watching Love Island, someone’s head always turns eventually. There’s always a mess made—it’s part of the show!
The biggest source of drama right now is Sol, who seems determined to outdo Melanie as the most emotional person in the villa this summer. In episode nine, Sincere was once again trying to win back Melanie’s trust after kissing Sol four times. He complained to the cameras that their relationship felt like a series of brief stops instead of progress. Melanie agreed to forgive him if he stopped kissing Sol, and excitedly announced she’d “got her man back!” But her happiness didn’t last long. The next morning, Sincere tried to be fair by making breakfast for both Melanie and Sol, which the other guys thought was a bad idea. This left Melanie upset and telling Kayda she wasn’t enjoying herself anymore.
Sol is clearly upset during the pie challenge, and it’s easy to see she’s no longer enjoying herself. After getting hit with pies twice, she’s initially angry, then breaks down crying and leaves the challenge. Even Melanie feels sympathy for her. KC and Sincere offer her comfort – KC says he’s there to listen whenever she’s ready, and Sincere encourages her to stay strong and remember her worth, offering this advice in the speakeasy.
Things were already complicated between Sol, Sincere, and Melanie, as Sincere kissed Sol again despite promising not to. When the public voted, it quickly resolved the issue by pairing Sol and Sincere together, and letting Corbin choose Melanie. This separation finally allowed Melanie to admit she was relieved to be done with the love triangle and stop arguing with Sol, especially after Sincere had just reassured her they could still make things work regardless.
Sol is quickly finding herself at the center of another romantic drama, this time involving KC and Aniya. I usually avoid dwelling on these difficult situations, and this one was particularly unpleasant. However, it’s worth mentioning that during a soccer competition (which Zach kept reminding everyone is called ‘football’), both Zach and Kayda confronted KC about not pursuing Sol because he supposedly didn’t want to deal with the complications. This understandably upset Aniya. Later, Zach admitted to Kayda that he was just being too blunt.
KC told Aniya he didn’t want to jeopardize their relationship for Sol, which Zach saw as KC implying Aniya was the easier, safer choice. KC claims he simply meant he’s content with things as they are, but his actions suggest otherwise – he twice told Sol today that he felt held back from pursuing her. He was actually explaining this to Sol when Aniya asked to talk about where they stood. She wanted a serious conversation, but he dismissed her concerns with laughter, which completely lost him my respect. He tells Aniya he would pursue Sol if he truly wanted to, despite clearly trying to do so right now. KC seems good at manipulating people, and I’m worried that when Sol eventually chooses Sincere, KC will make Aniya believe she rejected him instead.
The most surprising thing this weekend wasn’t about Sol or Bea. It’s that Kenzie and Corbin, who were both openly flirting with others while still officially together, can’t seem to stay away from each other, even after being separated by a public vote. The vote paired Kenzie with Caleb, who is exactly her usual type, and allowed Corbin to couple up with Melanie, whom he’d already tried to kiss. Everyone should be happy about this – except Melanie, who keeps bursting into tears whenever she tries to call it a “blessing in disguise.” But instead of moving on, Corbin and Kenzie are secretly meeting for make-out sessions in broad daylight. Corbin says their connection was “amazing,” and Kenzie admits she still has strong feelings for him, making the split difficult. Despite this, she tells Melanie to go ahead and get to know Corbin, and Corbin assures Melanie she’s his new priority. But nobody should take him seriously.
Zach and Kayda are finally heading to their getaway, even though Bryce tried – and failed for the third time – to win Kayda over. It’s hard to see how Bryce will convince Trinity, who’s starting to fall for him, that he genuinely cares about her when he’s still hung up on Kayda. Honestly, I want to tell Trinity she deserves better than a thirty-year-old DJ who can’t stop thinking about someone else.
