Someone on Polymarket wagered nearly $1 million – specifically $999,068 – betting that Spain would win, with a potential payout of over $1.08 million.
Despite the odds, Cape Verde defied them.

On June 15, Cape Verde kept Spain off the scoresheet, ending the match in a surprising 0-0 tie.
Since he bet on Spain to win, the tie resulted in him losing his $1 million wager. Reports indicate he wasn’t the only one who lost money on the game.
So far, the most popular bet on BetMGM for the World Cup was Spain winning. Mark Bickerdike, head of soccer at Caesars Sportsbook, explained that this outcome was a big result for the betting platform, as many people had bet on Spain both individually and as part of larger combinations.

X user Matty Chucks enthusiastically called it “free money,” stating that people could potentially earn either $100,000 or $80,000 with no effort. He dismissed any disagreement, confidently declaring his opinion was correct.
