I’m really excited to hear that 23 Jump Street is happening! What I always loved about the Jump Street movies – it all started back in 2012 with 21 Jump Street – is how clever they are. It’s a fun take on the old TV show with Johnny Depp, but with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as these hilarious cops who go undercover. They started in high school, and then in the sequel, 22 Jump Street, they took their undercover operation to college. It’s a great concept, and I can’t wait to see where they take it next!
Both 21 Jump Street movies were well-received by both critics and audiences. The first film received an 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned $201.6 million globally. The 2014 sequel performed even better, with an 84% critic score and worldwide earnings exceeding $331.3 million. Despite this success, plans for a third movie were put on hold. Now, a third 21 Jump Street film is officially in development.
Variety reports that a third Jump Street movie, 24 Jump Street, is being developed. Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and Ice Cube are all likely to reprise their roles. Rodney Rothman, who co-wrote 22 Jump Street and directed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, will direct. He also wrote the script alongside Hill and Meghan Malloy. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are returning as producers with Neal H. Moritz, though they won’t be directing this time.
The new movie’s title fits right in with the funny, self-aware style of previous Jump Street films. Those movies are known for making jokes about themselves – like openly admitting the first one was a remake of an old TV show. The title, 24 Jump Street, is another example of this kind of humor and keeps that tradition going.
24 Jump Street Is Embracing The Franchise’s Meta Humor
After a 12-year wait since the last movie, a third Jump Street film, titled 24 Jump Street, is officially in the works. Producer Neal Moritz shared a photo of the script’s cover on Instagram, playfully acknowledging the long gap with the caption, “It took so long to make we had to skip one.” The film seems to be leaning into the humor of its delayed production, making self-aware references to the time that’s passed.
Plans for a third Jump Street movie nearly took a surprising turn. Reports suggested a crossover with Men in Black was considered, and Channing Tatum confirmed in a 2024 interview with ComicBook.com that a script combining the two franchises was written – he even called it the best script he’d ever read for a third movie. Although that unique idea didn’t pan out, fans can still look forward to another installment in the Jump Street series.
The 21 Jump Street Franchise Has Included Many Self-Referential Jokes
The Jump Street movies didn’t take themselves too seriously and often poked fun at the fact that they were remakes. This self-awareness was often delivered through the character of Deputy Chief Hardy, played by Nick Offerman. In the first movie, he explains the premise – bringing back an old 80s undercover police program and updating it – then immediately jokes that the people in charge just don’t have any new ideas. It was a clear signal from the filmmakers that they knew they were making a reboot and weren’t pretending it was a completely original concept.
In 22 Jump Street, Hardy breaks the fourth wall, pointing out they’re making a sequel and joking that the studio spent a lot to keep the Jump Street series alive. He also quips that sequels are usually worse than the first movie. One of the most hilarious self-aware moments in the films happens during the end credits of 22 Jump Street.
The end credits of the movie hinted at several possible sequels to 22 Jump Street, including ideas like 23 Jump Street: Medical School, 24 Jump Street: Foreign Exchange Students, 28 Jump Street: Veterinary School, 30 Jump Street: Flight Academy, and 38 Jump Street: Dance Academy. The credits also suggested plans for an animated series, video games, and action figures based on the franchise. One particularly promising idea is 24 Jump Street, which could feature Hill and Tatum posing as foreign exchange students – a setup that would likely deliver the same funny situations fans have come to expect.
