Star Trek’s Divisive Series Sets Exciting New Release Today Ahead Of Final Season Return

A new installment of the often debated Star Trek show was released recently, just three months after its first season finished streaming on Paramount+.

With the rise of streaming, Paramount+ has launched several new Star Trek series, including Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds. The latest series, Starfleet Academy, finished its first season in March, but received a mixed reaction from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. A second and final season is planned for release at a later date.

Season 1 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is now available for purchase on digital platforms as of June 15th. When you buy the season, you’ll also get over an hour of bonus content, including behind-the-scenes featurettes like “First Year” and “Mario Magic: Props,” a blooper reel, two deleted scenes, and one extended scene.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy follows the lives of cadets training to become Starfleet officers at the prestigious academy. The series stars Holly Hunter as Chancellor Nahla Ake, one of the academy’s instructors. These aspiring officers face the challenges of completing their program while navigating friendships, romances, and rivalries, all complicated by a dangerous enemy threatening both the Academy and the Federation.

The cast of Hunter’s Star Trek: Starfleet Academy includes Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, Bella Shepard, Zoë Steiner, Tig Notaro, Robert Picardo, Oded Fehr, Mary Wiseman, Gina Yashere, and Paul Giamatti. Tig Notaro and Mary Wiseman reprise their roles as Jett Reno and Sylvia Tilly, characters they originally played in Star Trek: Discovery.

Gaia Violo developed the series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, with Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau leading the creative team as showrunners. They all also serve as executive producers alongside Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry (the son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry), Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber.

Alex Kurtzman has a long history with Star Trek. He previously helped write and produce J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek movies, as well as overseeing several Star Trek series on Paramount+, including Discovery, Short Treks, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds, and the upcoming Section 31.

Season one of Starfleet Academy launched in January 2026 to generally positive reviews, achieving an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audience reactions were more mixed, with a score of 52%. This discrepancy followed criticism from some conservative groups who accused Star Trek of being overly focused on social issues, despite the franchise’s long-standing commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Following a wave of negative reviews, Paramount – which has new owners since the show was first announced – announced the cancellation of Starfleet Academy. Although season two had already been ordered and filming had begun, the streaming service will still release it at a later date, which hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Besides the animated Starfleet Academy show, Strange New Worlds is currently the only other live-action Star Trek series still being made. Its fourth season premieres this July, and plans are already underway for a fifth and final season.

While we wait for the next season of Strange New Worlds, Star Trek fans can now purchase the first season of Starfleet Academy on digital platforms.
