It Sucks We Won’t See Amanda Seyfried’s Joni Mitchell

Fans who loved Mona Fastvold’s film, The Testament of Ann Lee, agreed that Amanda Seyfried should appear in more movie musicals. Lin-Manuel Miranda clearly recognized her talent, and many others feel the same way. Seyfried recently told GQ about a Joni Mitchell biopic she was cast in, but unfortunately, it’s been cancelled. The film would have focused on Mitchell and her manager, Elliot Roberts, but Roberts passed away before production could begin – after Seyfried had already met him. She even prepared for the role by having dinner with Mitchell herself, where they listened to Mitchell’s album Blue together. Seyfried remembered Mitchell commenting on how minimal and uncluttered the album sounded.

I was so impressed with how dedicated Amanda Seyfried was to preparing for this role! She actually taught herself to play the entire Joni Mitchell album Blue. She told me she literally cried when she finished learning the last song, ‘The Last Time I Saw Richard,’ because it felt like such an accomplishment – like she’d finally earned her place as a musician and conquered something huge. It was amazing! That dedication even led to this incredible moment on The Tonight Show where she played ‘California’ on the dulcimer for Jimmy Fallon. She sounded absolutely beautiful, honestly like something straight out of one of her movies.

Cameron Crowe, known for directing Almost Famous, is supposedly making a different biopic about Joni Mitchell, and Meryl Streep (who played Donna in Mamma Mia!) is rumored to be involved. According to Amanda Seyfried, many people questioned Crowe’s approach, asking why he was taking on the project. She understands his vision involves portraying Mitchell at both a young age and later in life. Seyfried believes she would be perfect for playing Mitchell as a teenager and jokingly suggests audiences could overlook the fact that she doesn’t exactly match the singer’s appearance at that age.
