SB Mowing raises over $600k for elderly woman who was scammed & went days without food

A TikTok video showing a yard cleanup by SB Mowing unexpectedly sparked a huge fundraising effort. Viewers donated over $600,000 to help an elderly woman who was struggling to pay her rent, afford medical care, and even buy food.

It all started with Zach, an Uber driver, who connected with Spencer, the owner of SB Mowing, after making a grocery delivery to a customer named Debbie. While bringing her groceries inside, Zach spotted her unkempt yard and decided to see if he could find someone to help her with it.

Spencer found Debbie in a difficult place after her husband passed away. He’d been diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer and told he only had about three months to live.

She explained that she’d lost a $2,000 deposit because a tree service didn’t finish the job they were hired for, and she was now three months behind on her rent payments.

SB Mowing launches fundraiser after hearing Debbie’s story

During a video showing the cleanup process, Spencer shared that Debbie was facing serious money problems and sometimes couldn’t afford to feed herself or her dogs.

He explained that there were times when she couldn’t afford to feed herself or her dogs.

Spencer and his dad worked for two days removing trash from the property, filling several trailers before they even started mowing the lawn. He also bought everything Debbie had intended to sell in a yard sale and donated it all, so she could get the money without the hassle of holding one.

Spencer explained that their organization, SB Mow It Forward, also paid the three months of back rent Debbie owed.

To do more, he started a GoFundMe to help cover her dental work, medical bills, and costs for finding a place to live.

The day after starting the fundraiser, Spencer excitedly showed Debbie how much money they had raised.

“We’ve raised just over $400,000 for you,” he told her in a follow-up video.

The news left Debbie visibly shocked as she learned that more than 13,000 people had donated.

“I can’t believe it,” she said. “How can people be so generous of a stranger?”

Debbie explained that the money raised will finally allow her to get necessary medical and dental care and move to a more manageable apartment. The fundraiser has since become even more successful, exceeding $600,000.

Uber driver credited for making fundraiser possible

After our fundraiser did so well, a lot of people started asking about Zach – he’s the Uber driver who originally emailed Spencer about Debbie and what was going on. He was actually the one who first brought her story to everyone’s attention!

In a recent video, Zach shared that he started driving for Uber and doing deliveries after his wife suffered a severe back injury that left her unable to work.

He shared that his family continued to struggle financially following the tornado damage to their home in 2022. On top of that, his wife experienced health issues after spine surgery, requiring several more months of medical treatment.

Spencer urged people to donate to a different fundraiser set up for Zach’s family, explaining that Debbie’s story wouldn’t have been possible without Zach’s generosity.

Spencer explained that he wouldn’t have located Debbie without a kind neighbor who not only picked her up but also went above and beyond by carrying her groceries to her back door.

Spencer has a history of generously supporting seniors. Just this year, in 2024, he helped raise over $500,000 for Beth, an elderly woman whose property he cleaned up. The donations were used to fix her home and cover everyday costs.
