Sony’s Venom Animated Movie Is Bad News for Spider-Man Fans

Big changes are coming to the Venom movie series, and many fans are likely to be disappointed. Only two years after the release of Venom: The Last Dance, the next installment featuring the popular comic book character has been officially announced.

As a huge cinema fan, I’m excited about this new Venom movie – Sony’s really doubling down on that awesome, if slightly terrifying, symbiote. But honestly, it’s a bit of a downer for me as a Spider-Man fan. Sony just revealed they’re working on another Venom project, and while it’s cool to see more of that world, it pretty much dashes any hopes I had of seeing Venom cross over into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. It doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen anytime soon, sadly.

What Does Sony’s New Venom Movie Mean For Spider-Man Fans?

The new Venom animated movie suggests we probably won’t see a showdown between Venom and Spider-Man anytime soon. While fans have long hoped for a battle between the two, Sony’s plans to make more Venom movies make that increasingly unlikely. It looks like Spider-Man fans will have to let go of the dream of seeing these rivals face off.

Sony’s agreement with Marvel is complex, and it allows Sony to block Marvel from using Spider-Man-related characters in their Cinematic Universe if Sony has plans for those characters themselves. A good example is Kraven the Hunter, who was considered for roles in both Far From Home and No Way Home, but Sony decided to give him his own movie instead, scheduled for 2024. With another Venom movie in the works, it’s probable Sony will similarly prevent Venom and any sequels from appearing in Marvel films.

Fans will likely be upset by this news, particularly those who were excited about the possibility of Venom joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After Venom briefly appeared in the MCU and returned to his own universe, it seemed likely Tom Holland’s Spider-Man would eventually fight his own version of the character. However, with Sony’s new Venom movie in development, it appears this storyline from five years ago will not be continued.

It looks like fans won’t see Venom or the symbiote in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie. While some hoped to see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man battle Eddie Brock or wear the symbiote suit, that’s unlikely to happen until Sony finishes its own Venom-related projects.

Venom and Spider-Man’s Live-Action Rematch Is a Long Time Coming

It’s been almost ten years since Spider-Man 3, and Spider-Man and Venom haven’t shared the screen together in a live-action movie. Although both characters appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home, they weren’t together. There were previous ideas for a team-up, but those plans were canceled. Now that a new animated Venom movie is being made, it doesn’t look like Spider-Man and Venom will appear together in a live-action film in the near future.

If Venom and Spider-Man team up again on screen, it will likely be in a future Marvel Avengers movie. Avengers: Doomsday, coming out later this year, will feature heroes from different universes, including the Fantastic Four. And Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for December 2027, is expected to have even more characters from across the multiverse, possibly including Tom Hardy’s Venom.

Currently, Avengers: Secret Wars appears to be the only opportunity for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Tom Hardy’s Venom to meet on screen. Beyond that, Spider-Man is expected to remain a key character in future Marvel movies and TV shows.

Even though Spider-Man and Venom have a famous rivalry in comic books, it looks like we won’t be seeing that play out on the big screen. Fans have been eager for a rematch, but it’s becoming increasingly unlikely.
