Strange New Worlds Is Missing A Golden Opportunity To Explore One Of Star Trek’s Most Underrated Captains

Despite its success, Strange New Worlds isn’t fully utilizing one of Star Trek’s lesser-known but excellent captains. The show, which came before The Original Series and focuses on Captain Pike’s five-year journey, has been very popular with Paramount+ viewers and fans alike. A new season is scheduled to premiere in July.

As a big Star Trek fan, I’m really enjoying Strange New Worlds! It’s a prequel to The Original Series, taking place about five years before Captain Kirk takes command of the Enterprise. What’s great is how it’s setting everything up for the classic show we all know. We finally get to see how Kirk and Spock first met, and it’s awesome to see the early days of characters like Uhura, Nurse Chapel, Scotty, and Doctor M’Benga. It really shows us how these iconic characters became the heroes we grew up with!

The series Strange New Worlds has enriched our understanding of classic TOS episodes. For example, the pilot episode revisits Spock’s former fiancé, T’Pring, who was first introduced in the TOS episode “Amok Time.” Unlike her initial portrayal as distant and unfeeling, Strange New Worlds shows T’Pring had valid reasons for her behavior and complex feelings about Spock. This adds depth to the original “Amok Time” and opens the possibility of bringing even more emotional weight to other beloved episodes.

“The Doomsday Machine” is Regarded as a Classic Star Trek Episode

During the second season of the original Star Trek, the episode “The Doomsday Machine” introduced Commodore Matt Decker. Decker commanded the Constellation, a ship similar to the Enterprise. In the episode, Decker’s ship encounters a powerful weapon called the Doomsday Machine, which attacks and leaves the Constellation disabled. Decker’s crew beams down to a nearby planet, but the Machine destroys it, leaving Decker alone on the ship to helplessly listen as his crew is lost.

Decker’s actions spiraled out of control, and he attempted to take control of the Enterprise, almost causing its destruction. He ultimately gave his life to stop the Doomsday Machine. Although it initially seemed like a futile effort, his sacrifice actually created the opportunity Kirk and his crew needed to succeed. Despite his earlier mistakes, Kirk made sure the official record recognized Decker as a hero.

“The Doomsday Machine” is now considered a classic Star Trek episode. Written by well-known science fiction writer Norman Spinrad, it’s a very tense story where Kirk and his crew desperately try to stop a powerful weapon while also dealing with Commodore Decker, who is struggling with trauma. Decker, played by William Windom, initially makes risky decisions that put the Enterprise in danger, but he eventually proves his worth.

Strange New Worlds Can Show Decker As the Great Captain That He Was Supposed to Be

Doing So Would Make a Classic Star Trek Episode Even Better

With two seasons remaining, Strange New Worlds has a great chance to revisit the character of Matt Decker and finally portray him as the skilled Starfleet officer he’s always been hinted at. Both Strange New Worlds and Discovery have established Decker as one of Starfleet’s most capable captains – The Doomsday Machine highlighted his past successes, and he was specifically included on a list of top commanders alongside well-known names like Jonathan Archer, Robert April, and Christopher Pike.

With Star Trek now acknowledging Commodore Decker’s skill, it’s a great opportunity to demonstrate his abilities instead of just talking about them. An episode of Strange New Worlds could showcase Decker’s greatness by showing him in action – how he interacts with colleagues, handles combat, and navigates diplomatic situations.

If Strange New Worlds had shown this, it would have given “The Doomsday Machine” a much more powerful emotional impact. Seeing Decker appear in Strange New Worlds beforehand would allow viewers to rewatch “The Doomsday Machine” with a greater understanding of his character and the immense sadness he felt after losing his ship and crew. It would make his breakdown and descent into trauma even more heartbreaking to watch.

Time is Ticking for Commodore Decker’s Star Trek Return

Despite having two seasons left on Paramount+, filming for Strange New Worlds is already finished and the sets are being dismantled. This means the storylines for the remaining episodes are already decided. Unfortunately, there’s been no indication that Captain Matt Decker will appear, which is a missed chance to revisit a compelling character from Star Trek and delve deeper into his story.
