While development on Thor 5 is progressing, the director behind the popular Marvel character has suggested a big idea for the next film’s storyline.
Kenneth Branagh, the director of the first Thor film from 2011, recently told Business Insider about potentially rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe and explained why he didn’t direct Thor: The Dark World. He said he was “absolutely ready for another film,” but needed time off. Branagh described Marvel shoots and post-production as incredibly demanding, though exciting, and emphasized his need to take a break, which both Kevin Feige and the cast understood.
You know, with talk of Thor 5 happening, it got me thinking about what director Kenneth Branagh said. He basically admitted he’d love to come back and give Thor a proper send-off. He’s always had more ideas for the character, and he even mentioned wanting to do something similar to Logan – a really personal, individual story for Thor and the rest of the team. He’d love to see Chris Hemsworth get a chance to really close out Thor’s journey with a powerful and fitting finale.
The director explained that Marvel Studios approached him about returning for Thor: The Dark World, directed by Alan Taylor, and he was happy they did. While they were understandably disappointed when he declined, he told Kevin Feige at the time that he didn’t feel creatively ready for a sequel, and thought they were right to want to make one quickly. He has since watched the later Thor films starring Chris Hemsworth.
The director praised the films as “amazing,” emphasizing his genuine admiration. He explained he watched them with both pride and wonder at the diverse directions the stories took. He believes this showcases Kevin’s initial vision for the character and its world, and how adaptable it’s been to different types of adventures, humor, and storytelling. He found the evolution of the series absolutely fascinating. The final two films, directed by Taika Waititi – Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder – earned a combined total of $1.6 billion at the box office.
Marvel is wrapping up its current Multiverse Saga, including Phase 6, and plans to begin filming Avengers: Secret Wars, which will conclude this large story arc. Despite this, Chris Hemsworth has hinted at continuing his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond 2027. In a 2026 interview on the Smartless Podcast, he mentioned he intends to play the character “a couple more times.”
Chris Hemsworth has expressed a desire to portray a more serious Thor in future films, particularly after Thor: Love and Thunder received some criticism for being overly comedic. Taika Waititi, the director of Love and Thunder, has confirmed he won’t be directing a potential Thor 5, as he told Insider in 2023 that he’s focusing on other projects he’s committed to.
Although Thor 5 doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet, Chris Hemsworth will return as Thor this year in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled to be released on December 18th.
