A highly-rated recent sequel will soon be available on a new streaming service, and fans won’t have to wait long – just a few weeks!
The horror sequel Black Phone 2 is coming to Netflix as its exclusive streaming home. Currently available on Peacock, it will move to Netflix on May 16th for ten months before returning to Peacock next year.
The Black Phone and Black Phone 2 — Explained
Released in 2022, The Black Phone is a film directed by Scott Derrickson, who co-wrote the script with C. Robert Cargill. The story is based on a short story by Joe Hill. The film stars Mason Thames as Finney Blake, a boy kidnapped by a killer known as The Grabber. While held captive, Finney discovers a mysterious black phone that lets him communicate with the Grabber’s previous victims.
I was so thrilled with how well The Black Phone did! It was amazing to see Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, and Madeleine McGraw return as Finney, Gwen, and their dad, Terrence. And I loved that Miguel Mora was back as Ernesto, just like Robin’s brother in the first movie. It was really special seeing James Ransone again too – sadly, it was his last film, but he was fantastic as always. It felt like the whole original crew was reunited, and it made the sequel even better.
Similar to the first film, Black Phone 2 has been well-received by both critics and audiences. Currently, Rotten Tomatoes gives it a “Certified Fresh” rating of 72%, based on nearly 200 reviews from verified critics. The movie has also performed well financially, earning over $132 million at the box office with a production budget of just $30 million.
What the Future Looks Like for The Black Phone
Beyond its critical and commercial success, Black Phone 2 received high praise from many prominent figures in the horror genre. One fan enthusiastically shared on social media, stating, “It’s not just as good as the first film… it’s actually better!”
It’s uncertain if there will be another The Black Phone movie, and even one of the writers, C. Robert Cargill, isn’t sure audiences would want one. When asked about a third film, he admitted he wasn’t sure if there would be interest, saying, “Would anyone want that? I don’t know. I hope other people would like that.”
You can now watch Black Phone 2 on Peacock. It will also be available on Netflix starting May 16th.
