Disney+’s 2-Part Sci-Fi Epic That Keeps Getting Better Succeeds In Its Hardest Task

The two-part story available on Disney+ is widely considered the peak of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it continues to impress viewers. What’s remarkable is the challenge it overcame: bringing together a massive, interconnected story after Disney bought Marvel in 2009 and gained access to all its characters and films. While some Marvel movies are stronger than others, this event stands out as consistently excellent.

The two-part event consists of the films Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Together, these movies concluded the “Infinity Saga” storyline in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, featuring a massive battle between Marvel’s heroes and the villain Thanos. Infinity War shows the Avengers trying to prevent Thanos from obtaining the Infinity Gauntlet, a powerful weapon he ultimately uses to eliminate half of all life. Endgame then focuses on the heroes’ efforts to reverse Thanos’s devastating victory.

Many fans consider Infinity War and Endgame to be the high point of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and they remain incredibly popular. These films are fantastic on their own, but what’s truly remarkable is how unexpectedly successful they were. Despite being incredibly ambitious, the Russo brothers directed them brilliantly, and seven years later, they continue to shape the MCU and stand the test of time.

Avengers: Infinity War & Endgame Were Incredibly Ambitious But They Worked Perfectly

Many thought Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame were too ambitious to succeed. They featured an enormous cast, represented the biggest movie budget ever, and had to tie together storylines and character arcs from almost twenty previous films, all within a relatively short amount of screen time – less than six hours total. Despite these challenges, the films were made.

Directing Infinity War and Endgame was an enormous task for Anthony and Joe Russo. They had to bring the stories of beloved characters like Iron Man, Captain America, and Loki to a satisfying conclusion, while also setting up future storylines for others like Thor and Spider-Man. Adding Captain Marvel and Ant-Man to the mix, and crafting a narrative where Thanos initially succeeded but the Avengers ultimately triumphed, was already complex. But their biggest challenge was ensuring that the culmination of ten years of Marvel Cinematic Universe films would leave millions of fans feeling satisfied.

The two-part Infinity War and Endgame were a remarkably successful and ambitious project. While Endgame had a few minor issues with its time travel plot and the way some characters, like Thor, were portrayed, it was surprisingly well-executed considering the scope of the films. Both movies effectively created a genuinely frightening villain in Thanos, gave the Avengers meaningful stakes, and were consistently engaging and fun to watch.

Compared to recent Marvel movies and shows, Infinity War and Endgame still hold up remarkably well. After Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe seemed to lose its momentum. Films like Eternals and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania weren’t well-received, and shows such as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and plans for Secret Wars didn’t quite succeed. In fact, very few projects since 2019, like Loki and Spider-Man: No Way Home, have earned widespread praise from fans. The ambitious plans for phases 5 and 6, particularly around the Kang the Conqueror storyline, have also faced challenges.

Even after seven years, many fans believe Infinity War and Endgame represent the peak of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, proving how impactful those films remain. In fact, the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday will directly continue the story from Endgame, essentially overlooking everything that’s happened in the MCU since 2019. Beyond their influence on the larger universe, Infinity War and Endgame are simply excellent films, widely considered two of the greatest superhero movies ever made.

Infinity War & Endgame Are Proof That The Russo Brothers Are Perfect For Doomsday & Secret Wars

Anthony and Joe Russo delivered incredible results with Infinity War and Endgame, demonstrating why they are the ideal directors for the next big Marvel undertaking: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. These upcoming Avengers films are shaping up to be even more expansive than the entire Infinity Saga, and that very ambition highlights why the Russo brothers are well-suited to bring them to life.

Similar to Infinity War and Endgame, Doomsday features a huge ensemble cast. The movie will combine the X-Men from Fox with the Fantastic Four and other characters from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thanks to its story involving multiple universes. Beyond that, Doomsday and Secret Wars need to get the MCU back on track after a mixed run of TV shows and films over the last seven years. This new phase doesn’t have the same strong start that Infinity War enjoyed.

The Russo brothers are uniquely qualified to tackle this challenge. They’re the only directors who’ve successfully managed a project of this size, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe relies on their expertise for huge, complex films like the Avengers series. Without them, Infinity War and Endgame wouldn’t have been the successes they are.
