MCC: Selma Blair Has Some Important Advice For The Legally Blonde Prequel

Selma Blair has been a popular actress for almost three decades, known for her roles in a wide range of projects – from funny comedies and dark superhero films to inspiring true stories. She recently appeared at Motor City Comic Con to connect with fans and celebrate her diverse career, including her memorable performances in movies like Hellboy and Legally Blonde, as well as the impact of her recent openness about personal challenges.

At Motor City Comic Con, ScreenRant interviewed Selma Blair about her experiences filming Hellboy, the guidance she offered to the team behind Elle, and the profound effect that both her documentary, Introducing, Selma Blair, and her work with organizations like the American Brain Foundation have had on her life.

Selma Blair’s Advice For Elle Is Perfect

Selma Blair first gained widespread recognition in the movie Cruel Intentions, and went on to star in several popular films in the early 2000s, most notably as the initially stuck-up, but ultimately kind-hearted Vivian in Legally Blonde. She still fondly remembers working on Legally Blonde, and it’s been on her mind lately with the upcoming release of a prequel series called Elle.

Legally Blonde was a really fun, vibrant, and classic movie that still felt fresh. It had a wonderful story, and I loved working with Reese Witherspoon on it. I know she’s now producing a new version, and I spoke with her recently. The actress playing Elle, Lexi Minetree, seems lovely.

It’s clear the team really loves that movie. Those films have a classic quality that still feels relevant today. They capture the spirit of John Hughes, but with a fresh, modern twist – it’s really fun and done with a lot of heart. The team at Elle understands it; they get the aesthetic, the color pink, and the overall feeling. My advice to them is simple: just have fun and enjoy the process!

How A Guillermo Del Toro Set Compares To The Rest Of Hollywood

Selma Blair gained a following among fans of sci-fi and fantasy thanks to her role as Liz in Hellboy. Her character, with both strength and vulnerability, became the emotional center of both Hellboy movies directed by Guillermo del Toro, alongside Ron Perlman’s portrayal of the hero. Blair still fondly remembers her time working on those films even after twenty years.

Working on Hellboy was an unforgettable experience. Being chosen by Guillermo del Toro and then getting to be part of his creative world on set was incredible. He didn’t rely much on green screen back then, using practical effects instead. Each monster was a real passion project, lovingly crafted by him and the special effects team.

It was incredible to see everyone working together – a truly amazing experience, and I felt so fortunate to be a part of it. Even though my time in makeup was short, it was clear how much dedication and talent everyone brought to the set. Being on set felt exactly like being in the cantina from Star Wars, which was a dream come true for me! [Laughs]

Selma Blair Finds Strength In Bonding With Others In Her Work With The American Brain Foundation

Selma Blair has become a powerful voice for those with physical challenges, especially after her diagnosis with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2018. She bravely shared her personal journey with MS in the 2021 documentary, Introducing, Selma Blair, offering a candid, compassionate, and honest look at living with the condition.

Since then, Blair’s advocacy work has continued to grow, most recently with her appointment as a global ambassador for the American Brain Foundation. By openly sharing her own health journey, she’s connected with others facing similar challenges, which she feels has made her a more compassionate person.

I connect with so many people who are dealing with long-term illnesses, or who have lost someone they loved to illness – whether it’s MS, a brain condition, or something else. Sharing my own experiences helped me become more compassionate, realizing I wasn’t facing these challenges alone. I hope I can be a source of support for others going through similar things, even if it’s just a small comfort.

I’ve received so much love and support, which has really given me strength. Having these people in my life means the world to me. I understand it takes effort to reach out, and I appreciate that so many of them do. It truly means a lot.
