James Harden was arrested in Houston when police discovered a handgun in his car. This happened only four months after he joined the Cleveland Cavaliers.
A 36-year-old security guard, James Harden, was arrested in Texas early Saturday morning, June 13th, for carrying a weapon illegally. Police say they found a handgun visible inside his car and that it wasn’t properly secured. The charge is considered a minor offense.
James Harden became a Cavalier in February after a trade with the LA Clippers. Cleveland sent Darius Garland and a future second-round draft pick to the Clippers in exchange for Harden, an 11-time NBA All-Star. This brought Harden back to the Eastern Conference and made him a key addition to the Cavaliers mid-season.
James Harden was arrested in Houston on Saturday after authorities found he was carrying an illegal weapon. Court records show his bail was set at $100, which has already been paid. He’s scheduled to appear in court again on June 22nd to determine the next steps in the case.

Harden accused of having gun in cup holder
James Harden was driving a Mercedes in downtown Houston around 3:40 a.m. with a group of other cars, according to the Houston Chronicle. Police stopped one of the vehicles near Jefferson Street, and Harden then drove up behind it.
According to reports, during the encounter, an officer noticed a gun in the cup holder of Harden’s vehicle. Harden reportedly admitted the gun was his, and he was subsequently arrested and taken to Harris County Jail.
According to TMZ, James Harden has been released on bail and is due in court on June 22nd. As part of his bail conditions, he’s prohibited from having any guns, bullets, or other weapons. He also can’t use alcohol or drugs unless a doctor prescribes them, and he’s required to take random drug tests.
The arrest happened soon after the Cleveland Cavaliers were eliminated from the playoffs. They lost to the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals with a 4-0 sweep. NBA.com pointed out that the team’s key players, including Harden, had only played a total of 25 games together since Harden joined in February.
James Harden is still a very popular athlete in Houston, having played for the Rockets for nearly a decade, from 2012 to 2021.
