YouTuber turns watch into playable Game Boy Color after two years of work

Okay, so this is seriously cool. A YouTuber actually managed to fit a working Game Boy Color – yeah, the whole console – inside a wristwatch! It’s not just a look-alike, you can actually play games on it. It’s the ultimate retro gamer flex and a total statement piece.

People are finding incredibly creative ways to play games, from running Umamusume on a refrigerator to playing Doom on a toothbrush. It seems there’s no limit to where and how we can enjoy our favorite titles!

A skilled YouTuber recently completed a two-year project: a Game Boy Color watch! It tells time and can also play classic Nintendo games, such as Pokémon Gold.

GBC turned into a smartwatch

The Game Boy Color is already quite portable, but its larger size can be inconvenient when you want to travel really light. That’s where the Time Frog Color comes in – it’s a much smaller version of the GBC designed to be easy to carry and provide quick moments of fun when you’re bored.

According to its creator, LeggoMyFroggo, a true Game Boy watch needs to stick to the original Game Boy CPU, play game cartridges, and keep time even when powered off. Anything less wouldn’t meet his definition.

To keep the device small and streamlined, the design uses custom parts and tiny controls. They’ve even changed how game cartridges connect and moved the battery into the strap to reduce overall size.

The YouTuber had to create a special display system to make the game work on a smaller screen, because the original Game Boy Color screen was too big.

LeggoMyFroggo jokingly described the Game Boy Color as having a pretty poor playing experience and a battery that doesn’t last long, suggesting it’s barely worth having – just a little better than putting ketchup on macaroni and cheese.

It’s still amazing to me that I actually have a working Game Boy Color – technically, on my wrist! This project took more than two years to complete, and I’m thrilled to finally be able to share it with everyone.

The creator has made the project open-source, meaning anyone can now create their own version of Time Frog Color. Unless, of course, they’re preoccupied with the unusual hobby of playing Minecraft on a receipt printer!
