A new XCOM board game has been revealed, taking inspiration from one of the most popular recent XCOM games. For the first time, players will use miniature figures to represent the operators in the game.
It’s common to see board games inspired by video games. We’ve already seen tabletop adaptations of popular titles like Monster Hunter, Sea of Thieves, Fallout, Mass Effect, and Bloodborne, among many others. In fact, an XCOM board game was released back in 2015, focusing on the strategic elements of the video game – things like research, base building, and defending against attacks.
I’m so excited! It looks like they’re finally making a new XCOM tabletop game, and it’s going to have miniatures – real, physical miniatures! From what I’ve seen, they’re really leaning into the tactical combat that everyone loves about XCOM, and they’re aiming for a feel similar to Warhammer, which sounds amazing.
New XCOM tabletop game set to release soon
To mark its 30th anniversary, Firaxis is updating its brand and releasing a new board game. This game will let you experience the intense battles from one of the most beloved XCOM games, and it’s being created in partnership with a well-known board game design company.
Modiphius Entertainment, known for games like the Fallout Roleplaying Game, the Mass Effect board game, Doom Arena, and the highly-regarded Skyrim: The Adventure Game, is developing this game. You can anticipate lots of diverse gameplay elements, detailed miniatures, and a game designed to be played again and again.

The new tabletop game will heavily borrow from the popular video game XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which successfully revitalized the series. This suggests the game will focus on tactical squad battles, careful positioning of units, and tough choices during combat, moving away from the more purely strategic gameplay of previous titles.
Firaxis hasn’t announced when the game will be released, how much it will cost, or what the tabletop version will fully entail. It’s still unclear if it will be a traditional board game or a role-playing game similar to Dungeons & Dragons or Fallout.
It looks like it’s time to create your perfect team and get ready for some face-to-face battles with friends – around the table instead of online!
