YouTube finally lets you share timestamped videos on mobile, but at a cost

YouTube is updating how people share videos on phones, and it’s also getting rid of an older sharing option.

A new update now lets mobile users share videos starting at a specific point in time, thanks to the “Share at Timestamp” feature. This function was previously available on computers, and is now being rolled out to the app.

YouTube also announced updates to its Clips feature, and it will no longer be the main way to share short video highlights.

This update is happening as YouTube continues to improve how people watch and share short videos on the site.

YouTube replaces Clips with new sharing feature

The “Share at Timestamp” feature allows you to link directly to a specific moment in a video, simplifying the process of sharing short clips without needing to edit or cut the video. It will now be the main way to share these moments, taking the place of the previous “Clips” feature.

You’ll still be able to watch Clips you’ve already created, but some features will stop working. Specifically, you won’t be able to choose exactly where a Clip starts and stops, or add text descriptions when you share them.

As a YouTube fan, I’m glad they’re streamlining things! They said these two features basically do the same thing, so simplifying it will make it way easier to share my favorite parts of videos with everyone.

YouTube Studio already has a feature called “Video Clips” that lets creators share shorter segments from their existing videos and past livestreams.

Later this year, YouTube will also bring Video Clips to its Shorts platform. To help creators easily find the best parts of their videos for clips, YouTube will suggest moments that are likely to perform well.

This update follows YouTube’s recent announcement that they would allow parents to completely block Shorts videos on children’s accounts.
