I was surprised to see that the Tomb Raider movie with Alicia Vikander is actually doing really well on Netflix right now! I checked the stats, and it was the ninth most-watched movie worldwide for the week of December 22nd to 28th. Pretty cool to see it popping up again!
The movie, which is two hours long, has been viewed 4.2 million times and streamed for a total of 8.2 million hours. It’s remained in the top 10 most-watched films on Netflix worldwide for the past two weeks.
It’s impressive that the action movie did so well during Christmas week, especially since most of the other top films were holiday-themed. ‘The Grinch’ was the most popular, followed by ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ at number four, ‘My Secret Santa’ at six, ‘The Christmas Chronicles’ at seven, and ‘Jingle Bell Heist’ rounding out the top ten.
While Tomb Raider isn’t currently on Netflix in the United States, it’s proven popular globally. The film earned $275 million in theaters worldwide, with most of that – $216.7 million – coming from audiences outside the US.
Roar Uthaug, the director of ‘The Wave,’ helmed this film, which also features Dominic West and Walton Goggins. Geneva Robertson-Dworet, later known for co-creating and showrunning the ‘Fallout’ TV series on Prime Video, was one of the writers involved in ‘Tomb Raider’.
Although a second Tomb Raider movie was planned, it never happened. Now, Prime Video is creating a live-action Tomb Raider series, starring Sophie Turner, who is known for her role in Game of Thrones, as Lara Croft.
At The Game Awards, two new Tomb Raider games were announced. A remake of the original 1996 game, titled Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, is scheduled for release in 2026, followed by a brand new game, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, in 2027. Alix Wilton Regan will be taking over the role of Lara Croft, replacing Camilla Luddington.
