Okay, so I was reading about this crazy thing – there’s this massive island of plastic floating in the Pacific. It’s gotten so huge that animals are actually living on it now. It’s pretty wild – and kinda sad – to think about all that trash becoming a habitat.
The North Pacific Subtropical Gyre is a massive, swirling current located between California and Hawaii. This current tends to trap floating objects, preventing them from spreading throughout the ocean.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a huge collection of plastic waste estimated to weigh around 80,000 tons, is found in this area. Surprisingly, scientists recently discovered that the patch has become large enough to support a home for many different kinds of marine life.
The patch’s biodiversity explained
Researchers gathered 105 pieces of plastic floating in the ocean – including items like buoys, bottles, and fishing nets – and brought them back to the lab for study. They discovered that various marine creatures, such as barnacles, crabs, sea anemones, and small shrimp-like creatures, were living on these plastic objects.
According to Earth.com, researchers found tiny creatures without backbones on 98% of the objects they examined. Marine life from the open ocean was present on over 94%, and coastal species appeared on about 70% of the items.
Researchers wanted to know if the ocean-dwelling creatures, normally found closer to shore, were living and reproducing in the open ocean or simply drifting with the currents. They discovered both young and adult individuals living on the plastic, indicating that these animals were successfully breeding and growing up entirely on this floating debris.
Plastic pollution is creating new homes for coastal creatures in the ocean. Previously, these areas were mainly inhabited by open-water species, but now both types of life are found there, demonstrating how significantly plastic is changing marine ecosystems.
Plastic pollution isn’t just unsightly trash; it’s actually changing and restructuring marine ecosystems globally.
