I’m already so hyped for the Elden Ring movie! It’s not even out until March 2028, but with those leaked images and footage popping up, everyone’s buzzing about what the story will be like, who’s going to play which characters, and how they’ll tackle the game’s famously mysterious backstory. It’s all anyone can talk about!
We don’t have all the details about the movie’s plot yet, but most insiders believe it will likely follow the story of the player character from the games. Leaked clips have confirmed that some well-known characters will appear, including the unsettling Dung Eater and the powerful Queen Marika.
Considering Alex Garland’s deep passion for Elden Ring and how much time he’s spent playing, it’s likely the adaptation will closely follow the game’s story. Given his dedication, it makes you wonder if he might even plan to continue the narrative beyond the main game, potentially covering the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion as well.
The Elden Ring Movie Has An Obvious But Perfect Sequel Setup
Since the first Elden Ring movie will probably cover the events players experience in the game, a sequel could easily draw from the story in Shadow of the Erdtree. With Miquella as the main character and Shadow of the Erdtree having a focused villain in Messmer the Impaler, the DLC actually offers a more straightforward story for a movie adaptation than the original game.
In terms of when it happens, the events of Shadow of the Erdtree occur at the same time as the original Elden Ring game, though time isn’t straightforward in that world. More importantly, this expansion builds upon the existing story, giving players a chance to explore the rich lore and mythology of the Lands Between. It will also take fans to a brand new location, The Land of Shadow, presented in live action for the first time.
These locations – St. Trina’s Garden of Deep Purple, the dangerous swamps of the Abyssal Woods, and the vast Shadow Keep – would be perfect for a live-action movie. While many fans are hoping for a Shadow of the Erdtree movie sequel, it’s not guaranteed to happen.
It’s really uncertain whether the A24/Garland movie will even be successful, let alone inspire a sequel. But if the first film does incredibly well, then we can start talking about a follow-up.
Will There Even Be An Elden Ring Sequel?
Fans are eager for an announcement of Elden Ring 2, but it likely won’t happen soon. FromSoftware is currently busy with several other projects, including The Duskbloods, and a new Tarnished Edition for the Switch 2.
Don’t get your hopes up too high for a second Elden Ring movie just yet. We probably won’t find out if one is even being made until after the first film comes out, but it’s likely that the same team will work on it if it does happen. Fans will have to be patient, as the first Elden Ring movie isn’t scheduled to release until March 3, 2028.
