Supergirl promises to bring a new kind of superheroine to the DC Universe.
As a huge superhero movie fan, I’m really excited about the new Supergirl film! It’s directed by Craig Gillespie and stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, who, as fans know, is the last daughter of Krypton and Superman’s cousin – David Corenswet plays him in this one. The cast is fantastic, including Jason Momoa, Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham. It’s cool to see Milly taking on the role because Supergirl has been portrayed before – Helen Slater played her back in the 1984 movie, and more recently, Sasha Calle brought her to life in The Flash last year.
In a conversation with Ebaster at CCXP Mexico, actress Alcock explained how her portrayal of Supergirl differs from previous superheroines. She said she approached the character as a unique individual, focusing on Kara’s own personality and story.
Alcock believes her portrayal of Kara is unlike any female superhero we’ve seen before. She explained that Kara has a genuine and unfiltered quality that’s missing from most superhero depictions. According to Alcock, the character is relatable because she’s flawed, confident, and has a playful attitude – she’s simply ‘messy’ and ‘cool.’
In a 2024 interview with Ebaster, actress Alcock reflected on the history of Supergirl and its different versions. She shared, “Every interpretation of the character is worthwhile because of the values she represents.” Alcock emphasized that Supergirl has been a beloved and important figure since the 1950s.
According to actress Per Alcock, each version of Supergirl is important for young women, offering someone to relate to. Melissa Benoist, who also played Supergirl on television, has voiced her support for Alcock taking on the role.
Wearing the Supergirl suit puts you in an exclusive group of actors who’ve played caped superheroes,” Benoist explained. Having played Kara for six seasons on the Arrowverse shows, she added, “It’s always meaningful to see the story and its established details come to life, and I’ll always be there to support it.”
Alcock also pointed out that Kara isn’t focused on saving the world, but rather on saving herself. She finished by saying the film is a powerful reminder that even when everything around you is falling apart, you can still be the hero of your own life.
Supergirl flies into theaters on June 26, 2026.
