Spirit Airlines is shutting down on May 2, 2026, and has cancelled all upcoming flights right away.
The airline, after 34 years in operation and a recent attempt to reorganize its finances, has announced it will be shutting down. The news was posted on the company’s website dedicated to the restructuring process.
Spirit tells passengers not to go to the airport
Just before it shut down, Spirit Airlines was trying to get a $500 million loan, but couldn’t come to an agreement with lenders and those who would have provided government support, according to the BBC.
Spirit Airlines announced on May 2, 2026, that it was immediately halting operations and beginning to shut down the company.
We regret to inform our customers that all flights are cancelled and our customer service team is no longer available. We’re proud of the affordable travel options we’ve offered for the past 34 years and are disappointed that we can no longer continue service.
The company announced on X (formerly Twitter) that it will automatically refund flights paid for with credit or debit cards back to the original card used for the purchase.
We haven’t yet decided how bookings made through other channels will be handled, and will share more information about those cases later.

The company closed down after starting the process of reorganization, and this closure means it will no longer operate.
As a long-time Spirit flyer, it was nice to hear them express their gratitude! They recently said thank you to all of us who’ve chosen to fly with them over the last 34 years, and honestly, it’s good to know they appreciate their passengers.
The airline didn’t explain what would happen to current bookings, and instead told customers to check its restructuring website for more information.
