With the new series gaining popularity, many viewers are wondering whether it’s best experienced in black and white or color. One of the show’s stars has shared their opinion on the matter.
“It’s been an ongoing debate, so it’s a really good one. I would have said initially, as a purist, that black-and-white would be the version to go for first. Then, delve into color. I did the whole thing in black-and-white, and then went back and watched it all in color. I got two experiences completely. I wanted each one of those experiences to be singular, and what they were.”
The discussion started after Amazon Prime Video revealed its new Spider-Man series—a dark and realistic take on the classic story set in the 1930s—would offer a unique viewing option. Viewers could choose to watch in full color, as is standard for television, or in black and white to match the show’s historical setting.
Viewers immediately shared their opinions online, and some strongly criticized the idea of watching the show in color, arguing it should stay true to the black-and-white style of classic film noir. However, many modern viewers, particularly younger ones, have grown up only watching programs in color and find it difficult to adjust to black and white, sometimes even avoiding these types of shows altogether.
According to Huston, there’s no hard rule about who prefers which version of Spider-Noir. He shared that his 13-year-old daughter actually chose the black-and-white version, while an older viewer preferred color. He believes it really comes down to personal preference. He suggests sticking with your initial choice, then revisiting the story to experience the other version from the beginning.
Jack Huston is Spider-Noir’s Sandman
Whether fans choose to watch Spider-Noir in color or in black and white, they will witness Jack Huston as a Depression-era version of Flint Marko, who is better known as the , Sandman. This reinterpretation is a bodyguard who is slowly dying because of his bizarre abilities.
Similar to Academy Award nominee Thomas Haden Church’s portrayal of the coarse convict in Sam Raimi’s overly hated, the English actor plays Marko as a tortured soul worthy of the audience’s sympathy. However, that will not keep him from falling prey to the hero of Spider-Noir, played by Nicolas Cage.
The Academy Award winner gives an acclaimed performance as veteran Manhattan private investigator Ben Reilly, who is forced to revive his double life as a webslinging vigilante known as The Spider. Cage previously voiced a version of the Spider-Man Noir character, created by writers David Hine and Fabrice Sapolsky with artist Carmine Di Giandomenico, in the hit, multiversal animated feature, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, in 2018.
Joining Nicolas Cage and Anjelica Huston in the cast of Spider-Noir are Lamorne Morris, who plays journalist Robbie Robertson, Li Jun Li as the captivating singer Cat Hardy, Abraham Popoola as World War I vet Lonnie “Tombstone” Lincoln, and Brendan Gleeson, nominated for an Oscar, as Irish mob boss Silvermane. Oren Uziel developed the series and is co-showrunning it with Steve Lightfoot.
You can watch Spider-Noir now on MGM+, and it will also be streaming on Amazon Prime Video starting Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
