Paul Rudd’s Dark Fantasy Horror Returns as a Streaming Hit on HBO Max After $16M Theatrical Run

It’s been over a year since the movie stopped playing in theaters, and it didn’t exactly have a big finale. Luckily, this surprisingly good horror comedy is now getting a lot of attention on streaming services.

According to FlixPatrol, the movie Death of a Unicorn is now among the top ten most-watched films on HBO Max in the US, landing at number seven. It’s also gaining popularity elsewhere, currently ranking as the sixth most-watched film on Prime Video in the UK. This shows that audiences are still discovering and enjoying this fantasy horror comedy, which first came out last year.

Why Death of a Unicorn Continues to Be a Hit With Audiences

Alex Scharfman’s film, Death of a Unicorn, stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega as a father and daughter, Elliot and Ridley Kintner, who are grieving the loss of their mother. Their journey to the grand home of the extremely rich Odell Leopold (played by Richard E. Grant) takes an unexpected turn when they encounter a young unicorn in a tragic situation, leading to a strange and imaginative story about the conflict between humans and animals.

The cast includes Belinda Leopold, played by family matriarch, Will Poulter as the young Shephard Odell, and Jessica Hynes as Shaw, the family assistant. Stephen Park and Sunita Mani also star as Doctors Song and Bhatia, who are employed by the Leopolds to create new medicines using substances from the unicorns.

When it was first released, Death of a Unicorn received mostly negative reviews from critics, resulting in a low 52% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences enjoyed the film much more, giving it a 76% rating on the site’s “Popcornmeter.” Despite this positive audience response, the film didn’t perform well in theaters, earning only $16.4 million worldwide on a $15 million production budget and ending its run quickly.

What’s Next for the Stars of Death of a Unicorn?

Although Death of a Unicorn didn’t perform well in cinemas, its stars, Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd, have exciting new projects coming up. Next October, Ortega will lead Taika Waititi’s Klara and the Sun as Klara, a robot designed to help a lonely young girl in a difficult future.

Paul Rudd returns as Ant-Man in a new Marvel movie on December 18th. This film, Avengers: Doomsday, will be the largest crossover in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, and it will officially introduce many popular characters from the X-Men, Black Panther, and The Fantastic Four franchises into the MCU.

You can now watch Death of a Unicorn on HBO Max and Prime Video, but it’s only available in certain areas.
