Sony raises PS Plus prices but existing subscribers can still escape the increase

PlayStation just made PS Plus more expensive, but some users get to dodge the increase.

Starting May 20th, Sony is increasing the price of its subscriptions for new customers in countries that use US dollars, Euros, and British pounds. This follows previous price increases for the PS5 console last August, and subscription adjustments over the past year in regions like Latin America, Southeast Asia, Australia, Canada, and South Korea. Sony also raised hardware prices globally in March 2024.

If you already have a subscription, you’re in a slightly better position, but there are still some requirements you need to meet.

PlayStation Plus price increase: what new subscribers will pay from May 20

Beginning May 20th, the price of a one-month PlayStation Plus Essential subscription will increase to $10.99 (US), €9.99 (Europe), or £7.99 (UK). A three-month subscription will cost $27.99, €27.99, or £21.99.

Sony cited “ongoing market conditions” as the reason for the adjustment.

Beginning May 20th, PlayStation Plus subscriptions will cost more for new members in certain areas. This price increase, driven by current market factors, will start at $10.99 USD, €9.99 EUR, or £7.99 GBP for a single month, and $27.99 USD / €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP for three months.

If you’re already a subscriber, you’ll continue to pay your current rate. However, if your subscription is interrupted, canceled, or if you switch to a different plan, the new pricing will apply.

Customers in Turkey and India will no longer have price protection, and the new, higher prices will take effect right away, not when their subscriptions renew.

Sony hasn’t released detailed pricing for every country, but the currencies mentioned in their announcement – US dollars, Euros, and British pounds – show where the price increase applies. For customers in the US, the most basic subscription tier will cost about $1 more per month.

In March, Sony faced backlash when its PlayStation Store displayed varying sale prices for the same games to different customers. The company didn’t publicly respond to the issue.
