Warner Bros. was very optimistic about Mortal Kombat II and demonstrated that confidence by moving its release date from fall 2025 to the start of the summer 2026 season. They even started working on Mortal Kombat III last year. It was unclear if this faith would pay off, but now it’s clear that it has, with the movie achieving record-breaking success.
Even before its release, Mortal Kombat II received the best reviews of any film in the series, earning a “Fresh” rating of 65% on Rotten Tomatoes – a first for the franchise. Once audiences saw it, the film received an impressive 88% rating on the Popcornmeter, breaking another record. This positive response has also helped the movie succeed at the box office.
Okay, so as a big fan of these kinds of movies, I was really interested to see how the new Mortal Kombat II did. And wow, it absolutely crushed it! It opened with a huge $38 million domestically, which is the best yet for the series. After just two weeks, it’s already made over $100 million, and it’s already earned more than the first reboot did overall. Even though it dropped a bit in its second weekend, I still think it’s going to keep bringing in audiences for a while, which is awesome.
The new Mortal Kombat movie is on track to become the most successful film in the franchise. Currently, it’s just $21 million away from exceeding the box office earnings of the original 1995 movie (without adjusting for inflation), and is expected to break that record within the week.
Why Mortal Kombat II Will Break The Franchise’s Highest-Grossing Movie So Fast
The new Mortal Kombat movie is on track to be the most financially successful film in the franchise, largely because past movies didn’t perform very well. While the Mortal Kombat games are incredibly popular, the films haven’t historically been a big hit with moviegoers.
As a lifelong movie fan, I always check out the box office numbers for my favorite franchises. When it comes to Mortal Kombat films, the first one from 1995 still reigns supreme, earning over $122 million worldwide – about $70 million in the US and another $52 million internationally. If you adjust for inflation, that US number jumps to around $162 million! But the new Mortal Kombat II is already making a splash, and it looks like it’s going to pass the original’s total worldwide within just the first couple of weeks. Pretty impressive!
| Mortal Kombat Movie | WW Box Office |
|---|---|
| Mortal Kombat (1995) | $122,195,920 |
| Mortal Kombat II (2026) | $101,232,532 (and counting) |
| Mortal Kombat (2021) | $84,426,031* |
| Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997) | $51,376,861 |
*released during the COVID-19 pandemic
As a lifelong cinema fan, and especially of action flicks, I’m thrilled to see how well Mortal Kombat II is doing. Honestly, this franchise has been hit or miss in the past, and another disappointing movie could have really hurt it. But with such amazing scores on Rotten Tomatoes and everywhere else, it feels like Mortal Kombat fans are finally getting the big-screen experience they deserve. It’s a huge relief and a genuinely exciting moment for us fans!
How Much Will Mortal Kombat II Make At The Box Office Overall?
It’s almost certain that Mortal Kombat II will be the highest-grossing film in the Mortal Kombat series. Now, everyone’s wondering just how much more successful it will be compared to other video game movies. Currently, the film is performing better in the US than in other countries, although its international numbers haven’t met expectations. The film’s release in Japan on June 5th could significantly boost those international earnings.
I was blown away by the incredible opening weekend, but I’m a little worried about how things will hold up. I remember when Mortal Kombat II came out – it had a huge first weekend, but then the numbers dropped dramatically, almost 65%! It seemed like everyone rushed to see it right away to avoid spoilers. This new movie is going to need people to keep coming back for multiple viewings, and that might be tough with so many other films competing for attention. I really hope it can maintain this momentum!
Despite appealing to different viewers, The Mandalorian and Grogu is expected to be the biggest summer movie release this week. Masters of the Universe, launching on June 5th, might draw viewers away from Mortal Kombat II. The film has had a good start, but its future success will depend on how it performs in the weeks to come.
With a reported budget of $80 million, Mortal Kombat II needs to earn around $200 million to be considered a success by typical Hollywood standards. Achieving that might be difficult for the series unless it continues to draw audiences over time and gains more popularity overseas.
While Mortal Kombat II is projected to earn between $150 and $180 million, which is a bit less than some expected, it will still be the most successful film in the Mortal Kombat series ever.
