The upcoming Shrek 5 is adding new characters: the sons of Shrek and Fiona! Saturday Night Live’s Marcello Hernández and Skyler Gisondo, known for playing Superman, will be providing the voices for the new additions to the swamp family.
Marcello Hernández and Skyler Gisondo cast as Fiona’s sons in Shrek 5
Marcello Hernández from Saturday Night Live and Skyler Gisondo, known for playing Superman, are joining the cast to voice the playful ogre brothers, Fergus and Farkle. They’ll be working alongside the original stars – Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz – who are returning as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona. New to the series, Zendaya will play Felicia, Shrek and Fiona’s daughter (according to Deadline).
Fans have been waiting a long time, but Shrek is coming back to the big screen! The new movie will be released on June 30, 2027 – a bit later than originally planned. It was initially scheduled for December 2026, but the release date was moved to take advantage of the summer movie season and make space for the release of Minions 3 in 2026.
Details about the plot of Shrek 5 are still being kept secret. However, Eddie Murphy has announced a Donkey spin-off movie is planned, with filming starting in September 2025 and a likely release date around 2028.
Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, both experienced with the Shrek movies, are directing the fifth film. Vernon helped direct Shrek 2 and provides the voice of Gingy, while Dohrn has worked as a writer and artist on previous installments and voiced Rumpelstiltskin. Joining them as a co-director is Brad Ableson, whose credits include Minions: The Rise of Gru and The Simpsons.
Gina Shay, who previously worked on the film, and Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination and known for franchises like Despicable Me, Minions, Sing, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, are producing the project. Michael McCullers is writing the screenplay.
Since it first came out in 2001, the Shrek franchise has made billions of dollars globally and is still DreamWorks’ biggest hit. Its popularity has led to a Broadway show, worldwide tours, and attractions at Universal Studios theme parks.
