Resident Evil movie director responds to fans complaining that it’s not based on the game

Zach Cregger has responded to the divisive reaction to the first trailer for his Resident Evil movie, especially from fans of the games it’s based on.

After directing one of the most acclaimed horror movies in recent memory, Weapons, fans were delighted to hear that Zach Cregger would be helming a new Resident Evil movie. Cregger has previously acknowledged the pressure of adapting such a beloved franchise, but fans were still divided when the first trailer was released.

Many were disappointed that the film doesn’t seem to resemble any past Resident Evil game, despite the plot running parallel to the second game in the series. No returning characters have been shown, and the story appears to be a self-contained one, focusing on medical courier Bryan in the middle of the outbreak.

Even though the movie has received a variety of reactions, the director remains confident in their choice to create something different from what fans expected.

Zach Cregger says Resident Evil fans don’t really want an adaptation

Cregger shared with Interview Magazine’s Curry Barker that he’s been enjoying the strong reactions to the movie’s teaser, even though opinions online are very divided. He said, ‘I really like the movie a lot. It’s been a wild week…’ since the teaser’s release.

“There’s so many people that clearly really want the video game, meaning the characters and story from the video game, and anything different than that is really not welcomed. I didn’t realize how passionate some people were about that.”

But although many fans are clamoring for a faithful adaptation of one of the classic games, Cregger believes that neither he nor the community would really be satisfied with that.

“If I did that I don’t think I’d be creatively fulfilled, and I don’t even think they would enjoy it,” he continued. “If I just did the story of the games, I think the most diehard fans would be bummed. So I don’t know what to do about it.”

Resident Evil is due to hit theatres on September 18 and is one of the most anticipated movies of 2026. Be sure to check our full calendar of all the biggest releases coming this year.
