Police accuse YouTuber of creating fake AI recording that ruined Korean actor’s career

A South Korean YouTuber is facing arrest after allegedly using fake AI-generated evidence in a scandal that derailed the career of one of the country’s biggest TV stars.

South Korean authorities are requesting an arrest warrant for Kim Se-ui, who runs the YouTube channel Garosero Research Institute.

Authorities accuse him of spreading false claims about actor Kim Soo-hyun, a hugely popular Korean drama star known for hit series including It’s Okay to Not Be Okay and My Love from the Star.

A major scandal erupted in South Korea after actress Kim Sae-ron tragically died in February 2025 at the age of 24. The controversy stemmed from accusations that she had been in a relationship with actor Kim Soo-hyun when she was a minor, and these claims spread rapidly online.

However, investigators now allege some of the evidence used to support those accusations may have been fabricated using AI.

YouTuber facing legal action over AI evidence

The Seoul Economic Daily reports that officials say a YouTuber posted fake screenshots and a sound recording that may have been created with AI. These materials were used to falsely suggest Kim Sae-ron said her relationship started when she was underage.

Kim Soo-hyun denied the allegations and later filed criminal complaints against the YouTuber, arguing the recording had been “fabricated using AI.”

South Korea’s forensic experts examined the recording, but they couldn’t definitively determine if it had been altered, according to reports.

The scandal had major consequences for Kim Soo-hyun career, as he was one of South Korea’s most recognizable celebrities before the controversy. He regularly starred in popular dramas, commercials, and major streaming projects, but following the backlash, the 38-year-old actor has disappeared from public appearances.

I was really surprised to hear about Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Sae-ron dating! He eventually confirmed they did date, but he was very clear that their relationship didn’t start until Sae-ron turned 18. It was good of him to address that specifically, honestly.

YouTuber Kim Se-ui’s pre-arrest interrogation hearing is reportedly scheduled for May 26 at Seoul Central District Court.
