Spider-Man is a hugely popular superhero, and his adventures have been adapted into many movies and TV series with different takes on the story. Now, a new version offers a unique twist: Nicolas Cage is playing Spider-Man in a Prime Video series.
Critics can now share their reviews of the series, which premiered on May 27th. Initial reactions were positive, with 78% of the first nine critics recommending it. That number has since climbed to 88% based on 26 reviews.
Okay, so as a huge Spider-Man fan, I’d say this doesn’t quite reach the heights of Disney+’s Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man or the incredible Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse – both of those are practically perfect with 97% approval! But it’s still really good, especially because it’s a more grown-up take on the character.
This film is very well-received, but scores slightly lower than several other popular Spider-Man movies. It has a similar approval rating to Spider-Man: No Way Home (93%), Spider-Man: Homecoming (92%), and Spider-Man: Far From Home (91%). It’s also comparable to the Tobey Maguire films Spider-Man 2 (93%) and Spider-Man (92%).
What Are Critics Saying About Spider-Noir?
The new superhero show, which isn’t afraid to be a bit edgy with its R-rating, is getting a lot of positive buzz early on. While opinions could change as more people see it, those who’ve already watched it are really enjoying the series.
Breeze Riley from Multiverse of Color points out that ‘Spider-Noir’ isn’t a typical superhero story. However, it’s surprisingly engaging, featuring a strong mystery and captivating acting that will hold your attention.
Alex Maidy from JoBlo praised Spider-Noir as potentially “one of the best Spider-Man projects ever,” expressing hope for future seasons that explore this unique corner of the multiverse.
Alex Godfrey from Empire enjoyed the new series, calling it a bold and successful effort. He described it as a wonderfully chaotic but surprisingly cohesive mix, and ‘total joy’ to watch.
Zach Pope of Zach Pope Reviews praised “Spider-Noir,” calling it exactly what he hoped for and a perfect addition to the Spider-Verse. He especially highlighted Nicolas Cage’s performance, the film’s fantastic noir style, excellent action sequences, and beautiful visuals, and expressed a desire for more spin-offs like it.
Critics weren’t impressed with the show, finding it unengaging and derivative. Danie Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter said the story felt frustratingly slow and borrowed too heavily from old detective stories without adding much originality. Aramide Tinubu of Variety agreed, calling it visually appealing but lacking depth, despite a good cast and some beautiful scenes set in the past.
Spider-Noir premieres on Prime Video on May 27.
