The Academy Awards has established new guidelines for movies, emphasizing that work and performances created by humans will be favored over content made using artificial intelligence.
On May 1, 2026, the Academy announced its decision regarding eligibility for the 2027 Oscars, deciding which films and other works would be considered for nomination.
The new rules, posted on the official Academy Press website, are as follows:
When considering films for awards, the Academy isn’t focused on whether artificial intelligence or other digital tools were used in their creation. They will evaluate the film based on the level of human creativity and authorship involved. Simply using these tools won’t improve or hurt a film’s chances of being nominated; the focus remains on the human artistic contribution.
Oscars lay down new AI rules putting human creators first
In an interview with the Associated Press, Academy president Lynette Howell Taylor stressed the importance of human creativity, stating that people should remain the core of any creative endeavor.
The discussion around AI will naturally change as the technology develops. However, when it comes to our awards, we will always prioritize work that is fundamentally created by humans, according to a recent statement.
Taylor announced that the Oscars will only recognize performances actually done by people who willingly participated. The Academy will evaluate the use of AI in films individually, looking at each situation separately.
“We, like everybody in our industry and world, will be assessing this every year,” she clarified.
The Academy Awards will no longer allow performances created by artificial intelligence to win Oscars. Only actors who genuinely perform their roles, with their full consent, will be eligible for acting awards.

The Associated Press reports that the Academy hasn’t commented on the discussion about the AI recreation of Val Kilmer used in the 2026 film ‘As Deep as the Grave.’ It’s currently unknown whether the Academy will consider the film for awards.
The Academy now states that screenplays “must be written by humans” to qualify for awards.
The Academy has released new rules about AI’s use in films, but generally discourages it. This puts them at odds with actors like Matthew McConaughey, who believes AI will soon become a part of the Academy Awards.
