The Pokémon Company and Nintendo announced today that Pokémon Pokopia, the new Pokémon life simulation game, will launch on March 5th, 2026, and will only be available on the Nintendo Switch 2.
Revealed in a Nintendo Direct presentation in September 2025, this new Pokémon game lets you play as a Ditto who can shapeshift into a human.
Ditto, as a newly created being, will be able to help with everyday tasks like decorating your home and customizing your surroundings. It seems all Ditto ever wanted was to exist within a relaxing and enjoyable game world.
You can now pre-order the game as a physical copy or digitally through the Nintendo eShop and My Nintendo Store. If you pre-order, you’ll receive a special Ditto rug to decorate with!
A new trailer will be released on November 13th at 9 AM Eastern Time, and it will likely show more details about the game.
Pokémon Pokopia Will Be A Game-Key Card Game
Here’s what we know about Pokémon Pokopia: it will be sold as a game card. This is significant because it’s the first Nintendo-made game to use physical game cards instead of traditional cartridges, a method that’s been debated by fans.
The game card doesn’t contain the game itself. It includes a code to download the game. You’ll still need to insert the card into your Nintendo Switch 2 to play, even though the game data isn’t stored on the card.
Predictably, the reaction to this news has been overwhelmingly negative. Nintendo released a video attempting to explain the new game-key card system, but fans are already familiar with the technology – they simply don’t like it. One commenter on the video expressed a common sentiment: “We don’t want Game-Key cards; they ruin the joy of collecting physical games.”
Several independent game developers have argued that game-key cards are unavoidable if they want to release games on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. However, considering Nintendo is known for efficiently managing game file sizes – as former Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé pointed out – it seems odd they can’t ensure their own games don’t need this technology.
