McDonald’s is bringing back its famous Fried Apple Pie and celebrating with a huge, 35-foot-tall pie statue! You can find this roadside attraction along Route 66 in Illinois.
A massive apple pie sculpture, playfully called “McDonald’s Largest Fried Apple Pie,” will be unveiled on June 23rd in Joliet, Illinois, near Chicago. This coincides with the return of McDonald’s popular apple pie to restaurants across the country, but only for a limited time.
The artwork is a giant replica of a famous McDonald’s menu item and will be shown until July 4th. It’s part of McDonald’s celebrations for America’s 250th birthday.
Visitors can now take photos with a giant apple pie at 920 N. Broadway St. and grab a souvenir guide to interesting McDonald’s restaurants nationwide, including one in Arizona famous for its turquoise arches.
McDonald’s Fried Apple Pie returns nationwide
A large-sized apple pie is coming back to McDonald’s, and it will be available at most locations starting June 23rd.
This dessert is made with American-grown apples encased in a crispy, fried pastry. Though you can still find fried versions in a few places, most locations now offer baked apple pies instead.
The McDonald’s Fried Apple Pie actually started in the 1960s. It was created by Litton Cochran, a McDonald’s owner in East Tennessee, as a homemade-style fried apple hand pie, and it quickly became a popular dessert on the menu.
McDonald’s owner Eric Cochran explained that the Fried Apple Pie evokes strong memories for many customers. He noted that it’s a nostalgic treat people often associate with their childhoods.
Ray Kroc was looking for a new dessert for McDonald’s, and my grandfather, Litton Cochran, recommended a Fried Apple Pie – he thought it was a timeless favorite. My grandmother, Jo Cochran, then spent months developing the perfect recipe. It feels especially fitting to bring it back this summer to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.
McDonald’s kicked off its celebration of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June with a special meal. It included collectible cups featuring famous soccer players like Christian Pulisic, David Beckham, Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, and Son Heung-Min. They also offered a World Cup-themed Happy Meal with fun Squishmallows toys.
