Conan O’Brien ended this year’s Academy Awards with a funny, pre-recorded sketch featuring actor Jim Downey – best known for his work on the Oscars. The bit referenced a scene from a fictional movie, recreating a moment where Downey’s character shows O’Brien to a new office, mirroring a similar scene with Sean Penn. The sketch ended with O’Brien’s character meeting a comical fate, and a plaque being changed to name MrBeast as the new “Host for Life,” hinting at the Oscars’ future move to YouTube in 2029. Given the positive reception to O’Brien hosting for the past two years, many hope he’ll return next year. If he does decide to step down, the sketch with Downey provided a fitting and humorous farewell.
I was so excited to see Conan and Robert Downey Jr. together again! It feels like a natural follow-up to that hilarious and surprisingly poignant moment on Conan’s podcast last year, when Conan had to tell Robert about the Jeff Epstein stuff. And what a year Robert’s been having! Not only was he in the Best Picture winner, but he was everywhere – in HBO’s The Chair Company, Happy Gilmore 2, and there was even a Peacock documentary, Downey Wrote That, all about his time writing for Saturday Night Live. Honestly, having him close out the Oscars, even if people were already heading for the exits and ordering rideshares, felt like the perfect way to celebrate everything he’s accomplished.
