Season 3 of House of the Dragon shows that the creators behind Game of Thrones have taken important lessons to heart. With HBO confirming this fantasy series will conclude after season 4, these new episodes mark the beginning of the story’s final stretch. It’s crucial that House of the Dragon justifies all the setup from previous seasons, and HBO signaled their intent by announcing that the premiere episode plunges directly into the intense Battle of the Gullet. This promises immediate excitement, and House of the Dragon absolutely delivers on that promise.

I’ve watched the first four episodes of House of the Dragon season 3, and I was really impressed that the strong start continued beyond just the premiere. The Battle of the Gullet is a key event in George R.R. Martin’s history of Westeros, and it’s a turning point in the Dance of the Dragons, as well as Rhaenyra Targaryen’s fight for the Iron Throne. This sets the stage for four episodes that move at a much faster pace than we’re used to in Game of Thrones.

The second season of House of the Dragon concluded with Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) agreeing to allow Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) to take the Iron Throne. However, this doesn’t mean the Greens will simply surrender. I anticipated the show would take a while to develop Rhaenyra’s storyline, but I was happily proven wrong. This new direction feels like a fresh take on the Game of Thrones universe.

House Of The Dragon Season 3’s First Episodes Show No Signs Of Game Of Thrones’ Old Pacing Issues

As a big fan of the Game of Thrones universe, I have to admit I initially shared the criticism that House of the Dragon felt a little slow. Season one wasn’t bad, but season two got bogged down in what felt like endless dreams and hints at what was to come. Honestly, it felt like we spent too much time waiting for things to happen. I also found D’Arcy’s portrayal of Rhaenyra a bit frustrating – she didn’t seem to be making any progress, and I struggled to connect with her as much as I did with characters from the original series. But wow, season three has completely turned things around! In just a couple of episodes, they’ve fixed the pacing issues and finally given Rhaenyra some real momentum. It’s a fantastic improvement.

The Battle of the Gullet is just the start of a much larger conflict. Ryan Condal, the showrunner for House of the Dragon, promised an incredibly ambitious battle, and he delivered. It’s a stunning display of warfare, featuring both thrilling naval combat and epic dragon fights – something never before seen in Game of Thrones. This intense battle propels the story forward at a rapid pace; season 3 doesn’t waste any time with unnecessary pauses as it moves toward its conclusion.

Watching House of the Dragon felt like the creators were listening to fan feedback on Game of Thrones. The show still has plenty of political twists and suspense, but it focuses more on characters and story than just big visual effects. If you’re used to the faster pace of later seasons of Game of Thrones and the first two seasons of House of the Dragon, be prepared for a welcome change of speed.

Emma D’Arcy Takes Rhaenyra Targaryen To Agonizing New Heights

D’Arcy is the standout performer in season 3 of House of the Dragon. It’s great to see this talented actor truly shine, especially after being underutilized in the first two seasons. These episodes finally allow D’Arcy to fully embody Rhaenyra’s potential – a queen who is strong, determined, and clever. With the previous limitations removed, we finally get to see the true essence of Rhaenyra’s character.

Emma D’Arcy delivers her strongest acting yet early in the second episode of House of the Dragon season three. While we’ve seen Rhaenyra deal with sadness before, D’Arcy conveyed a remarkable amount of emotion completely silently. But this moment felt different – more impactful. I was more heartbroken by this loss than anything that happened in Game of Thrones, and that’s entirely due to the raw pain D’Arcy brought to the performance.

In season 3 of House of the Dragon, Emma D’Arcy delivers a moving portrayal of Rhaenyra, delving into her inner thoughts and moral struggles. Despite the fast pace of the show, D’Arcy’s subtle acting makes Rhaenyra’s growth feel natural and believable. Many viewers will likely feel this is the kind of character development they wished they’d seen with Daenerys Targaryen in the final season of Game of Thrones, suggesting the showrunners listened to fan feedback.

House Of The Dragon Season 3’s Weakest Moments Are Still Those Changed From The Source Material

I’m very happy with how House of the Dragon improved its pacing in season 3, though it’s still not flawless. Some of the problems from the first two seasons are still noticeable, largely because the show continues to deviate from George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire & Blood. While I don’t mind changes like Alicent opening the gates or the removal of some minor characters, I was hoping the new storylines added in season 3 would be more impactful.

The latest episodes of House of the Dragon continue a change made in season two: Princess Rhaena Targaryen now rides the dragon Sheepstealer instead of Nettle, as she does in the original story. This decision creates a new plot point for season three, but frankly, it’s not very engaging. It highlights a recurring problem with the Game of Thrones universe – adaptations often feel weaker when they deviate from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books.

These first four episodes of House of the Dragon Season 3 are just the beginning, marking the halfway point of this nearly-final season – and it’s a very strong start! I’m excited to see how the story unfolds, and even hopeful that some of the changes from the original source material will ultimately work out. If the show keeps up this pace, House of the Dragon Season 3 could definitely change our minds about how Game of Thrones ended.
