Disney+ is adding another reboot to its growing list of revived shows. This time, they’re planning a live-action remake of the beloved ghost story, known for its friendly spirit.
Disney+ has won the rights to create a live-action series based on Casper the Friendly Ghost after a competitive bidding process involving five different companies. The series will be developed by Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston, who previously worked on the Disney+ Goosebumps series. Steven Spielberg, who executive produced the 1995 Casper movie, is also involved, along with Universal Studio Group’s UCP.
Letterman and Winston are both writing and directing the series. They’ll also be executive producers, along with Spielberg.
Details about the story are still under wraps, but this new project is being called a fresh take on a classic tale, with a similar dark and edgy tone to Netflix’s Wednesday, which put a new spin on The Addams Family. The upcoming live-action Casper series on Disney+ will likely use computer-generated imagery, especially to bring the ghost himself to life. Because the Casper reboot is only just beginning development, it’s not yet known when more details about the plot will be released.
