In Massachusetts, two children operating a lemonade stand near their house were held up at gunpoint by people wearing masks.
Twelve-year-old David Byrne and his eleven-year-old sister, Juliette, were running a lemonade stand in South Boston, Massachusetts. They kept the money they earned in a pink cash box on top of the stand.
Two young people wearing masks approached the siblings. Police say the suspects initially claimed they didn’t have any money and asked if the siblings accepted Apple Pay. Then, one of them pulled out a gun and stole the cash box.
Police arrest 14-year-old in connection with the robbery
The 12-year-old boy told CBS News Boston he was upset they had been chosen as victims. He explained that when the incident happened, his sister raised her hands in fear and he offered to let the robbers take whatever they wanted. But afterwards, he admitted feeling frustrated because he and his sister were so young – 12 and 11 years old – and shouldn’t have been targeted.
Police have arrested a 14-year-old in connection with the robbery that happened recently.
After what happened, kids in the neighborhood pitched in to help the siblings rebuild their lemonade stand with a fresh coat of paint. The community then rallied together for another sale, donating half of the proceeds to organizations working to prevent gun violence. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu even came out to support the event.
A family friend, Jonathon Raukohl, stated that they support the children’s continued efforts as young entrepreneurs and don’t intend to discourage them.
He explained that while this incident was terrible, it’s important to remember these activities happen frequently and are generally safe and enjoyable. They don’t want to discourage children from playing outside or socializing with their friends.
