The new Gears of War game, E-Day, cost around $400 million to develop. With such a high cost, it’s unclear if the game will be profitable, especially since it’s only available on Xbox and launches on October 6th.
According to Tom Henderson on the Insider Gaming podcast, the budget for the latest Gears of War game is incredibly high – reportedly over $400 million. He emphasized that this is an unusually large budget for a Gears of War title.
The conversation followed reports that Xbox executives decided at the last minute to make the game exclusive to Xbox and Game Pass, meaning it wouldn’t be released on PlayStation 5.
Can it make money on Xbox alone?
The group doubted it would be profitable. “To be realistic, it likely wouldn’t have made money even if it had been released on PlayStation,” Henderson added.
He questioned why anyone would buy an Xbox and Game Pass just for Gears of War, calling the decision to make the game exclusive to Xbox and not release it on PlayStation 5 a simple way to please dedicated Xbox fans instead of a smart business move.
The discussion centered on an Xbox internal memo that was recently shared in a report by Jason Schreier. The memo showed that Xbox invested more than $20 billion in games, technology, and special offers over the last five years, but its yearly earnings decreased almost half a billion dollars.

And it’s predicted things are going to get much worse – they’re saying prices could be five times higher by the time the 2027 holiday season rolls around. That’s pretty scary if you ask me, especially thinking about how much bigger games are getting.
