Anticipating Borderlands 4’s debut on September 12, Gearbox Software has disclosed the array of challenge levels available at launch. Unlike its predecessors, Borderlands 4 will provide a broader spectrum of difficulty settings, and for the first time, co-op players can choose to play on distinct difficulty levels within their party.
As Borderlands 4 prepares for release, Gearbox Software has disclosed additional details about the game, such as its PC requirements, graphics settings, and accessibility features. Alongside accessibility, they’ve also revealed the game’s difficulty settings, mentioning that these options could potentially make the game more approachable for certain players.
The available options for difficulty levels are labeled as Easy, Normal, and Challenging, according to Gearbox’s descriptions.
- Easy: “Looking for a story.” Reduced damage, Elemental Affinities matter less
- Normal: “Looking for a balanced experience.”
- Hard: “Looking for a challenge.” Increased damage taken, increased Cash, Loot Quality is increased, Elemental Affinities matter more
As a gaming enthusiast, I appreciate the flexibility in character creation where the level of challenge can be personally tailored. When playing cooperatively, this difficulty setting adjusts dynamically for each player, allowing me to opt for a tougher experience even when my companion prefers an easier journey through the game.
In practice, this implies that most of Borderlands 4’s challenge settings primarily affect the player rather than the enemies. The attacks and health points (HP) of the enemies remain unchanged, but if you play on a harder difficulty level, you’ll sustain more damage from each hit. Unlike other games where resources become scarcer on tougher difficulties, Borderlands 4 offers additional rewards for those who opt for the most difficult game mode, such as extra money and better equipment.
In Borderlands 4, not only do players face three initial challenges, but there’s also a tougher endgame difficulty called Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode. This new mode resembles New Game Plus, with enemies dealing more damage and being less vulnerable, but offering superior loot for a thrilling high-stakes, high-reward gameplay. The Ultimate Vault Hunter stands alone as its own game mode, featuring five progressively harder difficulty levels that become accessible as you conquer its various hurdles.
In simple terms, Borderlands 4 will be available starting September 12 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and personal computers. The Nintendo Switch 2 edition, however, won’t release until October 3.
