Valve is re-entering the living room gaming market with its new Steam Machine. The company thinks this small gaming PC will be as good as, or even better than, the computers most people currently use at home. According to Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat, the Steam Machine is designed to be both powerful and affordable, able to run most Steam games smoothly and with good graphics.
We’ve gained a lot of knowledge over the past decade, especially from developing the Steam Deck. We now have all the necessary hardware and software to achieve our goal,” said Aldehayyat. “We wanted a device powerful enough to play all Steam games, but also easy to use. Keeping the device affordable was a key consideration, and price heavily influenced the level of performance we aimed for. We also looked at data from the Steam Hardware Survey to understand what kind of hardware people already have, and we’ve made sure the Steam Machine performs as well as or better than 70% of those systems.”
Aldehayyat’s point seems reasonable. Even older gaming computers can still handle many games because of technology that improves image quality. Similarly, a lot of console games are still made to work on both new and older systems, like the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. Plus, Valve has stated their new Steam Machine is significantly more powerful than the Steam Deck – and its specifications confirm it should easily run today’s PC games.
The main question surrounding the Steam Deck isn’t about its performance, but rather how much it will cost when it’s released next year. Valve has stated they want to price it competitively, and experts estimate it could be as low as $400, or potentially up to $1,000 if Valve wants to either cover their costs or make a small profit. This is Valve’s second attempt at a Steam Machine, and they’re committed to learning from their previous experience.
