Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, created by Big Bad Wolf, is a detective-style game filled with challenging puzzles right from the start. Don’t worry if you get stuck early on – the puzzles are meant to be difficult!
The game’s challenges are meant to be really thought-provoking. Although the first two chapters require strong detective skills, Chapter 3: The Temple is where it becomes clear that the game prioritizes creating a tense atmosphere and offering clever puzzles.
Okay, so this chapter throws you right into the deep end – literally! I found myself smack-dab in the middle of some crazy ritual happening in R’lyeh, that sunken city. The catch? I had to finish it. It wasn’t easy, though. I had to solve a bunch of really tricky riddles, and in a specific order, no less! And get this – I even had to learn how to translate the R’lyehian language to figure things out. It was a total brain-bender!
Don’t worry! This guide will walk you through the third chapter, explaining each step in a clear and simple way.
How to Get the Battery & Turn on the Computer

At the start of this chapter, you’ll see three possible routes: left, right, or straight to a small area. Your most important task is to find a way to reach the computer on the right side of the altar – the one connected to the man – as it’s sitting on a crate.
I picked up this device and quickly realized it belonged to Anastasia Wolejko, a key scientist at Ocean-I. It’s full of her research on the R’lyehian language! And it looks like everything important around here is written in it. So, if I want to get anywhere, learning to translate R’lyehian is my top priority now.
The computer isn’t working, so you’ll need to find a working battery to get it started. You’ll see a battery is already connected, but it’s coated in something unusual. Examining it closely reveals it’s been damaged by corrosion and contains Helium and Potassium Hydroxide. These substances will automatically be added to your Sonar system, and they’ll become important later on.
Head around the back of the altar and you’ll discover a small Ocean-I camp with a few crates. Check the crate on the left – you’ll find more batteries, but a closer look shows they’re filled with Lithium instead of Helium. This suggests something isn’t right with the equipment in this area.
Just outside the camp, you’ll see two tables. Check the one furthest to the left, the one facing a tomb. You’ll find a note there explaining that the batteries stop working when they come close to certain metals.
Now that you know what you need, find a battery made with only Lithium and Potassium Hydroxide. Use your Sonar to activate those elements and scan the camp until you locate a working battery. Bring it back to the computer – that will unlock Anastasia’s research and let you decipher the inscriptions from the temple.
Finishing the Ritual: The Three Ancient Crowns
After you’ve translated the text, you need to finish the ritual begun by the Ocean-I team before they went insane. This ritual has three parts: locating three old crowns, performing a blessing on them, and then placing them on the heads of skeletons sitting on thrones.
Luckily, two of the three crowns are simple to locate because they’re both in the starting area. The first one is directly behind the main altar on the floor, and the second is on the table in the camp where we discovered the battery. We’ll find the last crown, which is hidden in the passage on the left, a bit later.
Before you continue, look behind the stone with the suffering man. You’ll find a small pool of blood you can use. This is how you bless the crowns you just found – dip them into the blood before going on!
How to Get Past the Hall of Secrets
Okay, so after the altar, if you head right, you’ll end up in this place called the Hall of Secrets. It’s like a really simple maze, honestly. You basically just keep going straight or turn around – that’s it! You just need to pick the right way to get through.
An audio recording found nearby reveals that Anastasia figured out how to solve the maze by researching ancient texts within the tombs close to the camp.
Now that you’ve translated the R’lyehian text, go back to the camp you visited earlier and examine the tombs – just the first two, as the third one is damaged. Investigating them will reveal that the key to solving the Hall of Secrets is hidden within the carvings on the walls.
Here’s the key to navigating the maze: In each area, look for a carving on the walls. If you find one, keep going straight. If not, turn back the way you came. Just keep repeating this until you reach the exit.
Be sure to investigate each sculpted panel – they’ll tell you the story of the ritual. If you follow the instructions correctly, you’ll reach the end of the hallway and find a skeleton sitting on a throne. Then, check the Ancient Crown with the Eye (turn it over in your inventory to make sure the eye symbol is there), and place it on the skeleton to finish the first part.
How to Get Past the Pool of Blood
Go back to the altar. Before turning left, make sure you’ve scanned both your Ancient Crown and the blood on the altar – this will show up as ‘Ancient Blood’ and ‘Orichalcum’ on your Sonar. Activate those items, then take the left passage from the main area.
You’ll enter a chamber filled with blood, with a sacrificed body lying in the middle. Flanking the body are two frightening statues on either side of the walls. Approach the statue on the right, where the water is deep enough to swim, and dive underwater to find a hidden passage. Your Sonar will be incredibly useful here; it will detect the unique combination of Ancient Blood and Orichalcum, leading you to the final Ancient Crown, and help you see through the murky, blood-filled water.
As you enter the first underwater section, look for bodies to examine and a small building you can climb. Follow the building to its end, then jump onto the floor in front of the tombs to uncover a hidden passage. Swim through this passage, using your Sonar to guide you, and you’ll find the final Ancient Crown – it has a claw symbol, so be sure to analyze it!
Leave this area and go back to the blood pool. Look for some underwater stairs that will lead you to another skeleton sitting on a throne. This skeleton needs the ancient crown you found earlier, but don’t forget to bless it first! To do that, go to the exit, which is right in front of the throne. You’ll find a locked door that needs a round object to open – and luckily, it’s on the floor nearby, next to a corpse and an audio log.
Take the item and open the door to return to the starting area with the blood-stained remains. Go back to the altar, use blood to activate the last crown, and then place it on the skeleton to finish this important part of the process.
How to Start the Ritual
When you place the second ancient crown on the skeleton, green slime will cover the temple, particularly around the altar. Return to the altar area and you’ll find a new skeleton sitting on a throne in the center of the room. You’ll also see disturbing evidence that the ritual is succeeding – the person trapped on the altar will be in much worse condition than before.
Now, simply place the Ancient Crown with the tentacles onto the newly appeared skeleton. This will begin the ritual, finishing Chapter 3 and unlocking the way to the portal. You’ll also encounter a Deep One, a creature you’ll see often from now on.
