In Borderlands games, Hyperion weapons were known for being top-notch firearms. However, in Borderlands 4, the company that produced them seems to have taken a backseat, with Hyperion barely making an appearance. It’s not just that Gearbox has forgotten about Hyperion; they’ve actively replaced it with other manufacturers for reasons related to both storyline and gameplay.
During an interview with Restart, Grant Kao, the creative associate director, shared that it wasn’t logical to include Hyperion weapons in Borderlands 4, but you might still encounter the brand name as a licensed element.
In Kao’s words, one reason Hyperion guns don’t completely reload in the game is because they start off being quite imprecise. However, when you keep the fire button pressed for a certain duration while using an assault rifle, SMG, or similar weapon, their accuracy dramatically increases to become the most accurate gun. The catch is that you have to empty out at least part of the magazine initially to achieve this level of precision. Although these guns offer high accuracy in the end, Kao felt that this mechanism didn’t fit well with the Borderlands gameplay experience.
In simpler terms, Hyperion was left out in Borderlands due to its strong connection to the game’s storyline. Not only did the company contribute to the game’s weaponry, but its CEO, Handsome Jack, played a significant role as an antagonist throughout the series. Since Jack lost power, it wouldn’t be logical for Hyperion to remain a powerful force in manufacturing, so Gearbox is introducing new manufacturers like Maliwan and the now plot-relevant Order to take their place.
Borderlands 4 is set to drop on September 12 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and personal computers. On the other hand, the Nintendo Switch 2 edition will be available starting October 3.
