One of 2025’s most underrated hidden gems just got a major update

A surprisingly good game from earlier this year, Sunderfolk, just received a big update. Sunderfolk was created by Dreamhaven – a studio founded by former Blizzard developers, who also released games like Wildgate and Lynked: Banner of the Spark. Sunderfolk is a fantasy RPG designed to feel like a tabletop game night, and it uses your phone as a controller. When I reviewed it in April, I said it could become a new favorite for the right group of players. Now, the developers have added a new “One Shot” mode.

Sunderfolk has a major update. One Shot Mode lets you get right into the action

Usually, Sunderfolk is played with up to four players in a story-driven campaign. You’ll engage in strategic battles with varied objectives, like defeating enemies or defending towers – but with a beetle twist! Outside of combat, you can explore the village, talk to characters, purchase items, and improve your character’s abilities. Previously, there wasn’t a way to quickly jump into a single battle or level for fun, as the game focused on longer campaigns that take several hours to complete.

Today’s update introduces One Shot mode, letting players immediately jump into any level they choose. Simply select One Shot from the main menu, pick your characters, and then select the level you want to play! This is perfect for those who want to skip the story and dive straight into the action, though we still recommend experiencing the campaign if you have time. Also, new campaigns now allow players to skip the tutorial levels and get started right away.

The new One Shot mode features four unique levels not found anywhere else in the game. The developers shared details about these levels on Steam. One level, called Snack Run, challenges players to guide a large beetle to its food while defending it from enemies. Another level, called You Asked For This, was created with help from the Sunderfolk Discord community, and the developers promise it’s surprisingly simple to complete.

Haven’t checked out Sunderfolk yet? Now’s the perfect time! The best part is, only one person needs to own the game for up to four friends to play together. You can find it on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. I’ve played with friends remotely using Discord and also had fun with local couch co-op. Whether you want a single quick adventure with One Shot mode, or a full campaign, either way is a great experience.
