Mortal Kombat II has once again switched release dates.
Okay, so I’m really excited about Mortal Kombat II! It’s the follow-up to the 2021 movie, and from what I’ve heard, it’s going to be awesome. Simon McQuoid is directing again, which is cool, and the cast is shaping up nicely. Karl Urban is taking on the role of Johnny Cage, and I’m particularly looking forward to seeing Josh Lawson as Kano. Jessica McNamee is back as Sonya Blade too, and honestly, the whole thing is promising a lot based on the games!
When is the new release date for Mortal Kombat II?
Originally, Warner Bros. and New Line planned to release Mortal Kombat II in theaters on October 24, 2025. However, the release date was later moved to May 15, 2026.
Deadline reports the sequel’s release date was changed because it’s expected to perform much better in mid-May than it would in the already crowded late October timeframe. October already has two other major releases scheduled: a Bruce Springsteen biopic from 20th Century Studios and a new film based on a Colleen Hoover novel from Paramount. The impressive 107 million views of the sequel’s trailer suggest it could achieve significantly higher numbers with a less competitive release window.
The release date for the Mortal Kombat sequel has been moved forward one week to May 8, 2026. This gives the film more time to shine before Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian and Grogu comes out on May 22.
Currently, the only other film scheduled to come out on May 8, 2026, is a comedy called The Sheep Detectives. It’s directed by Kyle Balda and features a cast including Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson, Nicholas Braun, and Nicholas Galitzine.
The new Mortal Kombat II movie stars Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, Joe Taslim as both Bi-Han and Noob Saibot, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion, along with other talented actors.
