Pragmata: Every Hacking Mode, Ranked

In Pragmata, a key part of fighting enemies involves hacking their systems. This lets you open them up and then attack. As you play, you’ll gain new ways to improve your hacking skills.

Mode Chips will improve your hacking abilities. These chips unlock different hacking modes, each offering unique benefits like increased damage, longer enemy vulnerability, or even a boost to heat generation.

Let’s take a look at all the different hacking abilities in Pragmata and see how useful they are during fights.

5. Hybrid Mode

Opening Robots Longer

Okay, so in Pragmata, the first Mode Chip I unlocked was the Hybrid Mode. It’s a game-changer when you’re hacking! Basically, when an enemy is vulnerable, it makes both open and attack nodes appear at the same rate, which is awesome. Plus, it boosts my damage and keeps those open windows lasting longer, giving me more time to really hit them hard.

This ability might seem useful, but it doesn’t quite measure up to other Mode Chips. It briefly extends the window of opportunity to attack enemies before they defend, and also includes upgrades that boost your damage output.

Splitting your focus limits the effectiveness of both options, resulting in lower damage compared to using a Strike Mode Chip. Swapping this mode for a different mod will give you a better advantage.

4. Strike Mode

Enemies Close Their Armor

Strike mode is really useful, but it has one minor drawback. When activated, the Mode Chip changes all available connection points into strike nodes, which cause damage when you hack vulnerable enemies.

If you shoot before hacking, your next hack will do more damage. This is especially effective when hacking an enemy that’s currently vulnerable. However, be aware that after you finish hacking, enemy armor will automatically close.

This can be frustrating because it forces you to hack enemies repeatedly to keep them vulnerable. A better solution is to use a modification that extends the duration enemies are exposed, allowing you to maximize damage with your weapons.

3. Offense Mode

Go on the Offensive

In Pragmata, the first Mode Chip you unlock is Offense Mode, and it’s a fantastic choice to begin with. When you hack an enemy, it transforms available nodes into offensive ones. Moving through these offensive nodes or hitting an enemy with a shot will boost the power of your next hack.

This Mode Chip functions similarly to Strike Mode, but with a key advantage: it prevents enemy armor from closing after being hacked. This allows you to repeatedly hack vulnerable enemies while simultaneously attacking, maximizing the damage from subsequent hacks.

By using mods that extend the time enemies are vulnerable, you can significantly increase the damage from your hacking, as you’ll have more chances to exploit those openings.

2. Boost Mode

Boost Your Abilities

As you play, you’ll unlock hacking nodes that let you modify your attacks. These changes can have different effects on enemies, such as freezing, confusing, or making them vulnerable.

The Boost Mode Chip upgrades your abilities, either extending how long they last or making them more powerful. For example, you can use it to let the multihack affect a larger group of enemies, or to increase the damage from the decode ability on those it targets.

This Mode Chip offers significant advantages, especially in battle. Its hacking nodes are all helpful, and selecting the right ones can help you defeat enemies more easily.

1. Combust Mode

Catching Fire

When you attack enemies, a meter will build up. The more you hit them, the faster it fills. Once full, the enemy overheats, leaving them vulnerable and taking extra damage.

The Combust Mode Chip converts vulnerable enemy points into heat sources during hacking. Shooting at or moving through these heat sources quickly fills the enemy’s overheat meter, making them easier to disable.

As a player, I’ve found this ability is a lifesaver when facing big, tough enemies, or even when I’m swarmed by a lot of them. It lets me quickly ‘overheat’ them, giving me the breathing room I need to dodge attacks and get in some damage of my own.

As a fan, I’ve found that this Mode Chip really shines when you pair it with the Multihack Node, or even the Skirmisher mod. Honestly, those combinations make it, in my opinion, the absolute best Mode Chip to use – it just takes things to the next level!
