Tencent Games and Grey State Studio’s new game, Rules of Engagement: The Grey State, won’t take players to Hell directly. However, this free-to-play action RPG combines tactical shooting with horror, and features a terrifying world filled with monsters and other frightening creatures that feel like they’re from a nightmare.
As a huge fan, I’m so excited about The Grey State! It’s this incredibly dangerous dimension, basically uninhabitable for us, but it’s full of amazing alien tech. The cool part is, we don’t actually *go* there. We play as Striders, piloting these bio-engineered bodies remotely from our own safe dimension. The developers, Grey State Studios, call it a ‘graveyard of nightmares’ – a true ‘Horrorverse’ packed with creatures ripped straight out of Lovecraftian stories, classic monster movies, creepy books, and even those terrifying tales you find online. It sounds absolutely wild!
Players enter a dangerous world called The Grey State with a ticking clock. They’ll need to quickly find equipment and then decide whether to escape with small rewards or risk fighting other players for a chance to win valuable alien artifacts.

Grey State Studios is starting an early test phase for their game, Rules of Engagement. Players will be able to choose from four different character types called Striders. While one Strider type is still a secret, here are the other three that have been revealed.
- Sledge, an unstoppable juggernaut that forges a path with shield and hammer
- Pyro, a chaotic madman that controls the battlefield with fire and gas
- Phantom, a swift assassin that strikes from the shadows with extreme precision
I’m really excited about this game! The developers have said that if you’re good at building and coming up with clever strategies, you’ll be seriously rewarded. What’s even better is they’re planning to support ‘Rules of Engagement’ for a long time – we’re talking years of updates to keep things fresh, like changes to the gameplay and new content. And the best part? They’re going with a free-to-play model where you can buy cosmetic items, but nothing that will give you an unfair advantage. That’s awesome!
I’m so excited! It looks like *Rules of Engagement: The Grey State* is finally coming to PC in 2026. The best part? You can play it solo, or team up with up to three friends. And it doesn’t stop there – the developers are already planning to add more content after launch, diving even deeper into the game’s spooky world. I can’t wait to explore everything!
